It uses estimates of the difference between real income and real output growth, based on measurement theory from the System of National Accounts, to measure trading gains that arose from increasing terms of trade over the period.

As a proof of this concept, data from the Statistic Canada's Survey of Industrial Processes (SIP) was used along with relevant environmental and statistical modeling methods to calculate estimates for gasoline evaporative losses from retail gasoline outlets across Canada.
