The article "Social anxiety disorder-beyond shyness" is the first of several articles to be released this fall in Focus on Mental Health, this year's annual supplement to Health Reports' How Healthy are Canadians? series.

Based on data from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey: Mental Health and Well-being, it provides prevalence estimates of social anxiety disorder (also know as social phobia) among the Canadian population aged 15 or older. The age of onset, duration of symptoms and relationship with other mental disorders are discussed. To assess the burden of social anxiety disorder, associations with social support, functional disability and quality of life are examined. The number of people who sought treatment to help them deal with their social fears is also explored.

Estimates of the prevalence of symptoms consistent with bipolar I disorder among Canadians aged 15 or older are presented. Factors associated with employment among people who have the disorder are analysed.

The prevalence of panic disorder by selected socio-demographic characteristics is examined in this article. Comparisons are made between people with a history of panic disorder and those who have never experienced this illness, in relation to chronic physical conditions, other mental health disorders, work status and coping.

Income data are collected by many household surveys. Some surveys have income as a major part of their content, and therefore collect income at a detailed level; others collect data from a much smaller set of income questions. No standard sets of income questions have been developed.

The Internet publication, Mental Health and Well-being, from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) provides cross-sectional estimates at provincial and national levels. Topics include the prevalence of various mental disorders (depression, mania, panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia), mental health problems (alcohol and illicit drug dependence, gambling, suicide, eating trouble) and access to and use of mental health care services in the past 12 months.

The survey also collects information on many determinants and correlates of mental health such as socio-demographic information, income, stress, medication use and social support.

Data were collected from close to 37,000 respondents, aged 15 or older, residing in households in each province.

The survey collects annual financial, operating and employment data on bus companies operating in Canada. It also includes municipalities and government agencies that operate urban transit and commuter services. The data are used as input to the Canadian System of National Accounts, by Transport Canada, other federal and provincial departments, and by transportation companies, consulting firms, universities and foreign governments. The information is used for the analysis of transportation activity, for marketing and economic studies, as well as industry performance measures.

This publication presents the monthly estimates of total receipts of restaurants, caterers and taverns both at the Canada and provincial levels. The estimates for restaurants are broken down into five categories (full-service restaurants, limited-service restaurants, contract caterers, social and mobile caterers and taverns). This work is an updated version of a study published under the same title following the population censuses of 1991 and 1996. The text and tables have been adapted to reflect the more complete data from the 2001 Census, in which the usual questions on knowledge of languages, mother tongue, and language spoken 'most often' at home are supplemented by a question on languages spoken 'regularly' at home , and a two-part question on language use at work, that is, the language used 'most often,' and other languages used 'regularly,' in the workplace. This enrichment of the content has allowed us to expand our analysis while remaining true to the initial goal of presenting in a straightfoward manner basic statistics on the country's demolinguistic reality.

This study examines the effect of Christmas shopping on retail sales and employment during the months of November, December and January. After the 2001 Census was taken, a number of studies were carried out to estimate gross undercoverage, gross overcoverage and net undercoverage.
