To find a specific place of interest, users can click and zoom on a map of Canada or they can search by place name, street name, street intersection or postal code. GeoSearch finds and displays the appropriate map that shows boundaries and other features. GeoSearch also automatically displays population and dwelling counts for the selected place, and shows what kind of geographic area it is and its relationship to other geographic areas. Go to the Census Geography area on the Statistics Canada website. GeoSearch 2001 is no longer available. Information relating to the census standard geographic areas can be found in the Geography section of the census website. Population and dwelling counts from the 2001 Census can be found in the 2001 Census Highlight Tables or in the 2001 GeoSuite.

This paper discusses in detail issues dealing with the technical aspects of designing and conducting surveys. It is intended for an audience of survey methodologists.
The advent of computerized record-linkage methodology has facilitated the conduct of cohort mortality studies in which exposure data in one database are electronically linked with mortality data from another database. In this article, the impact of linkage errors on estimates of epidemiological indicators of risk, such as standardized mortality ratios and relative risk regression model parameters, is explored. It is shown that these indicators can be subject to bias and additional variability in the presence of linkage errors, with false links and non-links leading to positive and negative bias, respectively, in estimates of the standardized mortality ratio. Although linkage errors always increase the uncertainty in the estimates, bias can be effectively eliminated in the special case in which the false positive rate equals the false negative rate within homogeneous states defined by cross-classification of the covariates of interest.

Richards, Brown, and Homan sampled hospital records to evaluate administrative data in Canada; Hargreaves sampled persons in hospitals to evaluate administrative data in Australia; and McLemoreand Pokras describe the quality assurance practices of an ongoing sample survey of hospital records in the United States. Each paper is discussed, along with the issues and challenges for the future.

Migration is a concern for rural and small town (RST) areas of Canada as rural development is essentially a demographic phenomenon. To date, there has been little analysis of migration patterns and their affect on RST areas. To better understand the contribution that movers have on the RST population, this paper documents internal migration into and out of RST Canada. Specifically, the characteristics of the moving population that are 15 years of age and over, with a focus on their levels of human capital, are examined. In addition, characteristics of migrating youth are discussed as youth can be seen as an indicator of the state of rural areas and are a key factor in rural development. The understanding of the patterns of migration may give rise to solutions for the retention of human capital in rural and small town areas and the promotion of rural development.
