This study compares the pattern of returns to the education required by an individual's job, including education beyond and below that level, to patterns in other countries. It explores the relationship between literacy skills and the educational requirements of an individual's job.

Males' suicide rate was four times that of females, but females were hospitalized for attempted suicide at about one and a half times the rate of males in 1998/99. About 9% of people who were hospitalized for an attempted suicide that year had been discharged more than once for a suicide attempt in the same year.

In 1998/99, just under 7% of Canadian adults reported having had unmet health care needs in the previous year. Using data from the Programme for International Student Assessment, this article examines issues relating to access and use of information and communications technology (ICT). The issues under study include: - the extent to which Canadian youth have access to and use ICT; - how access to and use of ICT by Canadian youth compares with that of children in other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries; - the relationship of ICT access and use to a student's gender; - whether the child was born in Canada; - the province lived in; - the school attended; and - socio-economic status.

This article estimates the cost for Canadian students studying in a master's program for one full year at a Canadian university, by province, field of study and gender. It uses the National Graduates Survey and supplemental information on tuition, incidental fees, books, room and board, and lost income.

There is a sizeable consumer market for entertainment services in Canada. Entertainment services consumption is influenced by economic conditions. For example, during economic downturns expenditures on discretionary items such as entertainment are usually the first to be cut. The opposite is usually the case when the economy is buoyant. Thus, entertainment services providers are more affected by business cycle fluctuations than industries that provide necessities.

The surveying and mapping services industry plays a key role in supporting other sectors of the economy: - the energy sector calls upon the services of geophysical surveying and mapping firms; - municipal governments, businesses, and homeowners require the services of land surveyors; and - both the private and the public sectors require custom mapping services, for a variety of applications.

In January 1999, the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS) received a commitment of four years funding from the federal government's Policy Research Initiative (PRI) to conduct a study on hate crime in Canada. The purpose of the overall study is to enhance our understanding of hate crime and to assess the feasibility of collecting police-reported hate crime statistics in Canada. In 2001, the CCJS released a report entitled "Hate crime in Canada: an overview of issues and data sources", catalogue no. 85-551-XIE.

This report helped to address some questions regarding the nature and magnitude of hate crimes in Canada, although certain data gaps were identified. As a result, it was determined that a pilot survey should be conducted with police departments that collect hate crime statistics. In order to determine specific information needs for the pilot survey, consultations were held with a number of academics; members of various non-governmental and community organizations; and federal and provincial departments responsible for the administration of justice, as well as police departments.

The Juristat publication, "Pilot analysis of recidivism among convicted youth and young adults, 1999/00," summarizes trends from the provincial/territorial courts across Canada that provided data to the Adult Criminal Court Survey (ACCS) and the Youth Court Survey (YCS). This report attempts to gauge the prevalence of recidivism in young adults by examining the conviction histories of young adults convicted in Canadian criminal courts in 1999-2000. It also examines the transition from youth to adult offending, including patterns of re-offending, differences in conviction histories by age of onset and the impact of conviction history on court sentencing.

We use data from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth to address two questions. To what extent do parents and children agree when asked identical questions about child well-being? To what extent do differences in their responses affect what one infers from multivariate analysis of the data? The correspondence between parent and child in the assessment of child well-being is only slight to fair. Agreement is stronger for more observable outcomes, such as schooling performance, and weaker for less observable outcomes, such as emotional disorders. We regress both sets of responses on a standard set of socio-economic characteristics. We also conduct formal and informal tests of the differences in what one would infer from these two sets of regressions.

International migration is a joint outcome of the individual's desire to migrate and the host country's selection process. First, the potential migrants apply to a host country, then the host country chooses migrants from the applicant pool. The theoretical focus of the earlier literature was centred on the desire to migrate, while the empirical literature focused on the actual migrants, while migration is the product of these two factors. The objective of this paper is to identify the components of this two-step, decision-making process

Parameters in the migration model relate directly to policy instruments such as the points awarded for various characteristics. Given the parameter estimates of the model and the general analysis of immigration policy, a study of the factors determining the individual's decision to apply can be done in a way that has not been possible up until now. Using samples of migrants and non-migrants, the model is estimated for migration from two different source countries, the United States and the United Kingdom, to Canada.

For migrants, a newly available longitudinal data set, the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB), has been used. The richness of this database, which surveys immigrants to Canada over a long period and contains information on both their application and subsequent earnings, permits the investigation of a large range of questions that could not be fruitfully addressed before. Estimation of the two-step framework provides important insights on the effects of factors, such as education and income, that help establish this selection process.

This document is aimed at describing the concepts, definitions, classifications and statistical methods underlying the output-based GDP series, also known as GDP by industry or simply monthly GDP.

The report is organized into seven chapters. Chapter 1 defines what GDP by industry is, describes its various uses and how it connects with the other components of the Canadian System of National Accounts.
