These data tables present 2001 Census highlights on "Mother Tongue" and "Knowledge of Official Languages".

These tables were available on the official day of release for each of the census topics at various levels of geography. They present information highlights through key indicators, such as 2001 counts and percentage distribution. The tables also allow users to perform simple rank and sort functions.

Using 2001 Census data, this day-of-release table provides a statistical overview of the languages, mobility and migration variables for Canada, provinces, territories, census divisions and census subdivisions.

On each of the days of release, profile component data will be available for particular topics at the Canada, province/territory, census division and census subdivision levels. Profile component data for all other standard areas, including census metropolitan areas, census agglomerations, census tracts, federal electoral districts (based on the 1996 Representation Order), dissemination areas and forward sortation areas, will be available approximately four weeks after the initial release.

In the census product line, groups of variables, such as this one, are referred to as electronic components of profiles. These are made available in each of the eight major releases of variables of the census cycle. Together they will form a complete cumulative profile of all the variables for each level of geography, plus one cumulative profile for the dissolved census subdivisions.

Overnight international travel to Canada posted its highest second-quarter result in the 27 years that international travel data have been collected. More than 5.4 million travellers arrived from foreign countries in the second quarter, up 3.4% from the second quarter of 2000.

Travel both by foreigners to Canada and Canadians to points abroad plummeted following the September 11 events in the United States. The aftermath of the events had a profound impact on all forms of travel, especially between Canada and the United States, from overnight trips to same-day car trips.

In the third quarter of 2001, consumers experienced an increase of 1.5 percent in the prices of goods and services included int he Travel Price Index basket. The only components to register index declines compared with the same quarter of last year were the operation of automotive vehicles, traveller accomodation and photographic equipment.

This study compares the pattern of returns to the education required by an individual's job, including education beyond and below that level, to patterns in other countries. It explores the relationship between literacy skills and the educational requirements of an individual's job.

Males' suicide rate was four times that of females, but females were hospitalized for attempted suicide at about one and a half times the rate of males in 1998/99. About 9% of people who were hospitalized for an attempted suicide that year had been discharged more than once for a suicide attempt in the same year.

In 1998/99, just under 7% of Canadian adults reported having had unmet health care needs in the previous year. In over half of cases, these were attributable to acceptability problems such as being too busy. About a third of episodes were attributable to perceived availability of service (long waiting times, for example). Accessibility (cost or transportation) problems were factors in just over 10% of cases.

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) represent both a "problem" and an "opportunity" for rural Canadians. On the one hand, rural employment levels are diminished as more services are supplied to rural Canadians by ICTs - the ubiquitous ATMs (automatic teller machines) are one example. The 2001 Census defines 27 census metropolitan area (CMAs) and 19 census agglomerations (CAs) with census tracts. This working paper includes three maps for each of these CMAs and CAs. The first map shows the boundary of the CMA/CA and the boundaries of the census subdivision (CSD) components of the CMA/CA for the 1996 Census. The second map shows the transition from 1996 to 2001 (with boundary changes highlighted), and the third map shows the CMA/CA (and component CSDs) as it is defined for the 2001 Census. Accompanying tables list the component census subdivisions and the criteria which they meet to be included in the CMA or CA. The paper describes various factors that can result in changes to the boundaries of CMAs and CAs. For the 2001 Census, municipal restructuring is the factor that has had the greatest impact on the boundaries of some CMAs and CAs.The paper also briefly describes and compares the delineation criteria for metropolitan areas in the United States with those for census metropolitan areas in Canada. An indication is given of the impact on the Canadian CMA program if the American metropolitan area criteria were used.

This book introduces technical aspects of the Statistics Canada Total Work Accounts System (TWAS). The TWAS is designed to facilitate the analysis of issues that require simultaneous consideration of both paid work and unpaid productive work. Its key contribution is to allocate the deemed output of each episode of unpaid work activity to a specific beneficiary or group of beneficiaries (called "destinations"). The guide presents the criteria used to decide the allocation of each work episode to one of the destinations, as well as the pseudo code for DESTIN, the key variable of the System. This pseudo code allows programmers to quickly create the actual programming code needed to derive the DESTIN variable in their own microdata files of diary-based time-use records. The guide also discusses illustrative applications of the System, as well as its key limitations.
