Description: The current study uses the 2011 National Household Survey and the 2016 and 2021 Censuses to provide data on the number of Indigenous foster children in private households, foster child rates, and disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous foster care rates between 2011 and 2021. Subsequently, select sociodemographic characteristics of Indigenous children in foster care and household characteristics are explored using the 2021 Census.

Description: The Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act (ESTMA) Data Portal is a collaboration between Statistics Canada and Natural Resources Canada, which administers the ESTMA. The ESTMA helps the Government of Canada deter corruption in the extractive sector by requiring extractive entities that are active in Canada to publicly disclose, on an annual basis, certain types of payments made to governments in Canada and abroad. The goal of the data portal is to increase the accessibility and utility of the payment information collected under the ESTMA by bringing together all available ESTMA data in one online location, and further enriching the payment data with analytical functions that help users to leverage the complete ESTMA dataset. The database has also been designed with mobility in mind to ensure that users and stakeholders have mobile access to ESTMA data.

Today, the phrases 'Fierce competition' and 'Internet access provision' are synonymous. The vastly changing Internet-access market is no longer the domain of its original pioneers - the so called 'traditional' Internet service providers (ISPs). As cable firms, telecommunication carriers and, more recently, wireless carriers flood the market, the business challenges facing firms classified to the ISP industry continue to mount.

Utilizing data from the 2001 Annual Survey of Internet Service Providers and Related Services, this paper examines some of these challenges by exploring various industry characteristics in conjunction with important issues for future growth. The primary focus of this paper revolves is the industry's perception of factors that impede the growth of businesses and highlights the significant distinguishing characteristics among small, medium and large-sized firms. Examination of responses from firms revealed five principal obstacles to growth: 1) competition; 2) cost-related impediments revolving around both ends of the ISP business, their links to consumers and their links to the Internet; 3) delays in obtaining facilities from suppliers; 4) access to financing; and 5) access to markets.

To provide additional context to the main analysis, the paper also contains background information on the demand and supply side of the Internet-access market, financial performance analysis and structure of the ISP industry.

This analysis integrates data for age at smoking initiation, smoking patterns (ever/never smokers), and number of cigarettes smoked by age and gender from 13 Canadian population-based health surveys. Data for cohorts of individuals born between 1910 and 1985 were combined into a single dataset to analyze changes in smoking behaviour.The proportion of males and females who stated that they were current smokers declined considerably over the years; the proportion labelling themselves as former smokers has increased; and recent cohorts are smoking fewer cigarettes than those born earlier in the century. Although prevalence rates vary across birth cohorts, the pattern of use within each cohort is fairly similar, peaking during the middle years.Females are now starting to smoke at a much younger age than females born early in the twentieth century. Males are starting at a slightly younger age than in earlier cohorts. Since the first survey, more males than females have consistently stated that they were current smokers, although this gap has closed over time. The most recent survey data suggest that the gender gap for age at initiation and smoking rates is now very modest.This analysis contributes information about smoking patterns over time to a large integrative framework about population health in Canada: the Population Health Impact of Disease, Injury, and Health Determinants in Canada (PHI).

Using Census data from 1981, 1986, 1991 and 1996, this study examined the association between living in a visible minority enclave and immigrants' labour market outcomes in Canada's three largest cities. The results showed that the number of such enclaves, defined as census tracts with at least 30% of the population from a single visible minority group (Chinese, South Asian or Black), increased from 6 in 1981 to 142 in 1996, mostly in Toronto and Vancouver. The association between exposure to own-group neighbours and employment was at times negative, but generally not significant. Exposure to own-group neighbours and working in a segregated occupation was positively, but not significantly, associated. Little association existed between exposure and employment earnings. However, there were some important group differences. The associations between exposure to own-group neighbours and labour market outcomes were usually very weak among Chinese immigrants, but often negative and strong among Black immigrants.

This study uses data from the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) to identify three pathways taken by high school graduates by the time they are 20 years old and to examine the factors related to one pathway versus another. The three pathways consist of participation in postsecondary education right after high school, delayed post-secondary participation, and non-participation in postsecondary education. The young people who took these pathways are referred to as right-awayers, delayers and no-goers, respectively.

The data were analysed in two phases. The first phase was a descriptive analysis that compared delayers and no-goers with right-awayers, with respect to demographics and family-related, school-related and postsecondary financing factors. The second phase used separate logistic regression models to evaluate how the factors predicted that someone might be a delayer instead of a right-awayer, or a no-goer rather than a right-awayer.

The study found that several factors were significant predictors of either delayed post-secondary education enrolment or non-enrolment in a post-secondary program.

Food processing is one of Canada's largest manufacturing industries, consisting of more than 3,000 establishments. Employing close to 230,000 people in 1998, it boasted a gross domestic product of $15 billion that same year. The relationship between the use of advanced manufacturing technology and firm performance during the 1990s, as measured by growth in labour productivity and growth in market share, is the subject of a recently released Statistics Canada study, which finds that a high-technology orientation is closely associated with success.

Description: Data from the Census of Population are important for all communities and are vital to plan services that support education, employment, transportation, health care and housing. To maintain the relevance of the census, Statistics Canada evaluates and reviews the census questionnaire content for each census cycle. In preparation for the 2026 Census, Statistics Canada consulted Canadians from fall 2022 to spring 2023. Detailed responses were received from organizations and individuals representing federal, provincial, territorial and local government departments; First Nations people, Métis and Inuit; the general public; academia; special interest groups; and the private sector.

This report focuses on the findings of the 2026 Census data needs consultation and stakeholder discussions. Chapter 1 explains whom we consulted. Chapter 2 describes the strength of census data users’ needs such as the size of the population of interest. Chapter 3 provides an assessment of the perceived data gaps in census content and the availability and suitability of alternative data sources. Chapter 4 focuses on information needs by census topic and how preparations for the 2024 Census Test will help meet these needs.

Description: This report presents the results of a study on the estimated number of children eligible for instruction in the minority official language, pursuant to section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, who were classified as ineligible in the 2021 Census because relationships between family members living at different addresses could not be established within this data source. Using other data sources, including previous censuses and administrative data (such as vital statistics and tax data), we were able to establish these family relationships within the 2021 Census. This report presents the methods and data sources used first, then the results by selected regions and age groups.
