While the primary reason for international students being in Canada is for study purposes, they may also participate in the labour market. Increases over the past two decades in the number of international students, alongside programs designed to facilitate their availability to work while studying, parallel a growing role played by this population in the Canadian labour market. This article assesses the extent to which international students who intended to study at the postsecondary level were engaged in the labour market.

Postsecondary students can claim postsecondary education credits to lower their tax obligations (or that of a parent, grandparent, spouse or common-law partner, or their parent or grandparent). Claiming the credits is costless, but it does require knowledge of how the credits work to reduce taxes. As a result, claim rates may be unequal across socio-economic backgrounds, including the level of parental income (a key policy lever for needs-based student financial aid). The purpose of this article is to document claim rates among postsecondary students by level of parental income, as well as to re-assess trends in postsecondary enrolment rates by level of parental income in light of unequal claim rates. These trends were previously established with information on the tax credits in tax data. This study uses data from the T1 Family File (T1FF) and the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS), which have been recently linked for all ten provinces from 2009 onwards.

Despite women outnumbering men in postsecondary institutions, women are considerably less likely to select the higher paying STEM fields, which could be a factor in the gender wage gap. While many studies have examined the persistent underrepresentation of women in STEM programs among postsecondary graduates, the goal of this study is to advance the Canadian evidence in three ways. First, the study distinguishes between two types of gender differences in the probability of selecting STEM-related fields in a bachelor’s degree program: those that are conditional on enrolment in a bachelor’s degree program and those that are unconditional on doing so. Second, the study highlights gender differences in specific STEM programs. Third, the study addresses the substantial sample attrition affecting longitudinal household surveys that have been used to study the issue in several previous studies. To do so, the study uses an administrative dataset that provides detailed academic performance information on students from kindergarten to Grade 12 in Canada’s third-most populous province, British Columbia.

Description: This interactive tool provides an overview of the student debt and estimated gross annual earnings of postsecondary graduates in Canada. Estimates are available for four levels of study (college, bachelor's, master's and doctorate) and by province of study or location of residence at time of interview. Measures of student debt include the percentage of graduates who owed debt to any source at graduation, the average amount of that debt, and the percentage of those graduates who had paid off their debt by the time of interview. Estimated gross annual earnings are measured at the 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile.

Description: Given the large differences in educational attainment observed across non-Indigenous population groups in Canada, understanding when these differences emerge and what may explain them is an important first step in informing policy discussions on the issue. Using the British Columbia kindergarten to Grade 12 dataset, the Postsecondary Student Information System, the 2016 Census of Population, and the T1 Family File tax data, this study follows several cohorts of Grade 9 students in British Columbia over time to explore differences between population groups, by gender, in the probability and timing of high school graduation and enrolment in academic postsecondary programs.

Description: Recent years have witnessed a small decrease of domestic student enrolments and a growing number of international students in Canadian postsecondary programs. Using enrolment data from the Postsecondary Student Information System, this study examines the relationship of changes in domestic students’ postsecondary enrolments with the influx of international students during the 2010s by educational institution and field of study and provides one of the first empirical analyses of the relationship in the context of Canada.

Description: To understand the heterogeneity of post-migration labour market and educational outcomes, this article focuses on immigrants who completed post-secondary education or apprenticeship training post-admission to Canada. It uses data on immigrants who were admitted in 2010 and 2011 through an economic immigration stream, studying those admitted as principal applicants with no prior temporary permits (such as work or study permits) seven years after admission. Understanding the pathways and outcomes of this group can allow a better understanding of the labour market integration of immigrants, and the impact that Canadian education can have on their economic outcomes.
