  • 3. Childhood factors associated with the completion of a high school diploma or equivalency certificate or higher among First Nations children living off reserve, Métis and Inuit children

    Description: Using a longitudinal dataset created through the linkage of the 2006 Indigenous Peoples Survey (IPS; formerly called the Aboriginal Peoples Survey) and the 2016 long-form Census, this study examines childhood factors that are associated with the completion of a high school or greater education by young adulthood, among off-reserve First Nations, Métis and Inuit children. Bivariate results examining the likelihood of having completed high school or greater education by different childhood characteristics including socioeconomic and demographic ones are presented for First Nations children living off reserve, and Métis and Inuit children separately. These characteristics were chosen based on previous literature. Using a pooled sample, it examines the association between childhood factors and the outcome using multivariate analysis to account for confounding factors.

Where possible, estimates are presented by Indigenous identity group, gender, and age with those for the non-Indigenous population provided for context.

  • 5. Acute-care hospitalizations among First Nations people, Inuit and Métis: Results from the 2006 and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts

    The objective of this study was to describe sex-specific hospitalization rates among Indigenous people in Canada (excluding Quebec), separately for First Nations people living on and off reserve, Inuit living in Inuit Nunangat (excluding Nunavik), Métis, and the non-Indigenous population. The 2006 and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs) were used, allowing hospital records to be examined by Indigenous identity as reported on the census. The following research questions were addressed: (1) How do leading causes of hospitalization and rates from the 2006 cohort compare with those from the 2011 cohort? (2) How do leading causes of hospitalization and rates differ for females and males and by Indigenous group? (3) What are the largest disparities in hospitalization rates between Indigenous and non-Indigenous females and males?

    Description:

    The Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS) is a national survey on the social and economic conditions of Aboriginal Peoples (First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit) aged 15 years and over. The 2017 APS represents the fifth cycle of the survey and focuses on issues of transferable skills, practical training, use of information technology, Aboriginal language attainment, and participation in the Canadian economy. The 2017 APS public use microdata file (PUMF) package has been designed to enable users to access and manipulate survey microdata at the national level. The package includes a microdata file; SAS, SPSS and Stata syntax; and a users' guide. The users' guide provides general information on the survey as well as guidelines for releasing estimates calculated using the PUMF.

    This paper seeks to fill a gap in existing literature on disability among Indigenous peoples. Disability prevalence was established for each of the three Indigenous groups based on the Disability Screening Questions (DSQ), included in the APS for the first time in 2017. The study also uses data from the 2017 Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD), this data source is used to establish disability rates for the non-Indigenous population, to help contextualize findings for First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit.

    Description:

    This topic presents data on the Aboriginal peoples of Canada and their demographic characteristics. Depending on the application, estimates using any of the following concepts may be appropriate for the Aboriginal population: (1) Aboriginal identity, (2) Aboriginal ancestry, (3) Registered or Treaty Indian status and (4) Membership in a First Nation or Indian band. Data from the 2011 National Household Survey are available for the geographical locations where these populations reside, including 'on reserve' census subdivisions and Inuit communities of Inuit Nunangat as well as other geographic areas such as the national (Canada), provincial and territorial levels.

    The analytical document provides analysis on the key findings and trends in the data, and is complimented with the short articles found in NHS in Brief and the NHS Focus on Geography Series.

    The NHS Profile is one data product that provides a statistical overview of user selected geographic areas based on several detailed variables and/or groups of variables.   • 9. Upgrading and high school equivalency among the Indigenous population living off reserve

    Among people who leave high school prior to completion, many return to formal schooling as adults. High school equivalency programs (such as a General Educational Development or Adult Basic Education program) give them the opportunity to go back and complete high school requirements. Using data from the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, this study examines the factors associated with upgrading and high school equivalency among the Aboriginal population living off reserve. It also examines whether high school equivalency or upgrading is associated with better educational and labour market outcomes.

    The objective of this study was to describe sex-specific hospitalization rates among Indigenous people in Canada (excluding Quebec), separately for First Nations people living on and off reserve, Inuit living in Inuit Nunangat (excluding Nunavik), Métis, and the non-Indigenous population. The 2006 and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs) were used, allowing hospital records to be examined by Indigenous identity as reported on the census. The following research questions were addressed: (1) How do leading causes of hospitalization and rates from the 2006 cohort compare with those from the 2011 cohort? (2) How do leading causes of hospitalization and rates differ for females and males and by Indigenous group? High school equivalency programs (such as a General Educational Development or Adult Basic Education program) give them the opportunity to go back and complete high school requirements.     This topic presents data on the Aboriginal peoples of Canada and their demographic characteristics. Depending on the application, estimates using any of the following concepts may be appropriate for the Aboriginal population: (1) Aboriginal identity, (2) Aboriginal ancestry, (3) Registered or Treaty Indian status and (4) Membership in a First Nation or Indian band.     Technical details on sampling, processing and data quality are included in this guide. Further, the guide explains the relationship between the APS and the 2006 Census and cautions users as to important differences in the data produced from these two sources. Appendix 1 provides a list of communities for which data are available while Appendix 2 contains a glossary of terms that relate to the APS. Answers to some frequently asked questions are provided in Appendix 3. Links to the 2006 APS questionnaires are found in Appendix 4.
