    Description: This product presents selected data from the linkage between the Census of Agriculture and the Census of Population at the national and provincial levels, every five years. It provides a socioeconomic profile of the farm population (i.e., operators and their families) at the person, family and household levels, and includes variables such as age, sex, marital status, ethnicity, country of birth, mother tongue, educational attainment and income.

    Agriculture–Population Linkage databases have been created quinquennially since 1971, with the exception of 1976 and 2011.

    This publication contains annual data from 1926 to date on net farm income for Canada and the provinces. Data highlights and concepts and methods are also included.

    In May, annual measures for the previous two calendar years are subject to revision. In November, estimates for the previous three years may be revised. Every five years a historical revision is done, based on the results of the Census of Agriculture. Although the data are available in late May and late November, the publication is not completed and released until the following July and January, respectively.

    Data from Canada Revenue Agency's income tax returns of unincorporated and incorporated farms provide the statistical basis for this publication.

    Description:

    The Farm Income and Prices Custom Retrieval Service provides a set of aggregate financial data at the Canada and province levels by compiling data from various surveys and administrative sources. The major data series currently offered by the Farm Income and Prices Custom Retrieval Service are: the farm cash receipts, expenses and net income series, the farm capital value series and the debt series. The farm cash receipts series provides information on gross revenue and prices by commodity ( wheat, oats, cattle, eggs, etc.) and on all direct program payments. Information on detailed expense items ( wages, crop inputs, machinery) and depreciation are available in the expenses series. Data on net cash income, realized net income and total net farm income are included in the net income tables. The farm capital value series include information on value of land and buildings, machinery and equipment and livestock and poultry.

The publication also includes some analysis and explanatory notes on concepts and methods.

How do I use the filters and the search box?

How do I refine my search?

  • You can enter keywords in the search box. It is not necessary to use “+” or “, “ or “AND”.

  • You can delete some or all of the keywords from your search string.

  • Quotes around keywords limit the search to a specific phrase.

    • For example, “labour force survey” will limit results to products containing this phrase.

  • Use “or” between keywords to obtain results that contain one or more search terms.

How does the search work?

  • This search looks for results that have your query term in the title, description, subject, geography, product number or other information about the product.

    • For example, when searching the term ‘Diseases’, all results with the word ‘Diseases’ in the title, description or tagged the subject appear.

  • The text within an article or publication are not searched. For full text searching of articles, use the site search.

How are the results ordered?

The Sort by feature provides three options:

  • By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
  • By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
  • By title – sorts results alphabetically.
