This article examines the life expectancy of Canadians within an international and national context. A variety of factors related to differences in life expectancy are explored including: smoking, drinking, and obesity; socio-economic variables such as gender, education, and income; and other factors such as population density and remoteness.
Release date: 2011-04-15 - Articles and reports: 82-622-X2010005Geography: CanadaDescription:
Health disparities between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations in Canada, including differences in life expectancies, have clearly been established. A variety of sources is currently used to measure and document these disparities, yet information gaps persist. Because of limited coverage and sample sizes, reliable health information that reflects the diversity in Canada's Aboriginal population is not always available. By assigning 2001 Census data for small geographical areas to hospital discharge records from the 2001/2002 Hospital Morbidity Database, this report provides estimates of morbidity serious enough to require hospitalization. Acute-care hospitalizations of people living in areas with a relatively high percentage of Aboriginal residents are compared with hospitalizations of residents of areas where the percentage of Aboriginal residents is low. Variations by predominant Aboriginal identity in these areas - First Nations, Métis and Inuit populations -are also explored. Factors that potentially underlie differences in hospitalization rates between residents of high- and low-Aboriginal areas are determined by adjusting for urban/rural residence and area socio-economic characteristics.

Area-based indicators are commonly used to measure and track health outcomes by socio-economic group. This is largely because of the absence of information about individuals in health health administrative databases. This study compares area-based and individual indicators.

This article profiles differences in health-adjusted life expectancy across income categories for a representative sample of the Canadian population. Mortality data were obtained from the 1991-2001 Canadian census mortality follow-up study, which linked a 15% sample of the 1991 adult non-institutional population with 11 years of death records from the Canadian Mortality Data Base.

- Table: 84-537-XDescription: This electronic publication contains life tables comprising life expectancy and related estimates by age and sex for Canada, the provinces and territories. Detailed estimates (by single year of age) have been produced for Canada and all of the provinces, except Prince Edward Island, based on two types of complete life tables: three-year estimates (for periods of consecutive three years) and single-year estimates. Aggregated estimates (by five-year age group) have been produced for Prince Edward Island and the three territories separately based on abridged life tables (three-year estimates).Release date: 2023-11-27
- Data Visualization: 71-607-X2020017Description:
The dashboard presents data that are relevant for monitoring the impacts of COVID-19 on mortality in Canada. It includes the latest weekly death data and historical weekly death data back to 2014 from the Canadian Vital Statistics: Death database (CVS:D). The CVS:D is an administrative survey that collects demographic and medical (cause of death) information from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all deaths in Canada.
With this tool, data users can explore current and historical weekly trends of deaths for each province and territory. Key variables such as age group and sex are also presented in interactive charts.
The interactive tool allows users to examine excess deaths by comparing the trend in weekly deaths in 2020 to the trends in weekly deaths in previous years.

Release date: 2009-05-25 - 5. Youth Smoking Survey ArchivedPublic use microdata: 82M0011XDescription:
The main objective of the 2002 Youth Smoking Survey (YSS) is to provide current information on the smoking behaviour of students in grades 5 to 9 (in Quebec primary school grades 5 and 6 and secondary school grades 1 to 3), and to measure changes that occurred since the last time the survey was conducted in 1994. Additionally, the 2002 survey collected basic data on alcohol and drug use by students in grades 7 to 9 (in Quebec secondary 1 to 3). Results of the Youth Smoking Survey will help with the evaluation of anti-smoking and anti-drug use programs, as well as with the development of new programs.
Release date: 2004-07-14 - 6. Vital Statistics Compendium ArchivedTable: 84-214-XDescription:
This compendium of vital statistics includes summary data on births, deaths, marriages and divorces. The introduction covers the data sources, data quality, and methods pertaining to each event, and includes a glossary defining the terms used. The first chapter is a brief overview of vital statistics for 1996. Subsequent chapters treat marriage, divorce, birth, fetal and infant mortality, total mortality, causes of death, vital statistics by census division, and international comparisons. Most charts and tables show Canada data for 1986 though 1996, while the charts and tables for causes of death show Canada data for 1979 through1996. Data for the provinces and territories are usually shown for 1995 and 1996. Appendices include population denominator data, age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) calculation methods, and leading causes of death methodology.

When Chiang's "standard" method is used, calculating life expectancy for (small) census agglomerations in Canada can produce estimates whose confidence intervals are too wide to be useful. However, we have been able to show that by combining small area estimation methods and simulation methods, we can obtain narrower confidence intervals.

- Articles and reports: 11-522-X20050019492Description:
Although it is preferable to calculate population health indicators such as life expectancies in different health states based on health data from longitudinal surveys, they are almost always calculated using health data from cross-section surveys. One way of overcoming this challenge is to use health information collected retrospectively. This study is based on two major propositions. The first proposition is that population health indicators can be calculated using data with retrospective information on health. The second proposition is that estimates calculated based on such data would closely approximate estimates calculated based on data with current health information.
