In 1997, shipments of manufactured goods increased by 6% compared to a 4% drop the previous year. This paper, based mainly on the results of the 1996 Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM), examines some of the factors affecting these industries and compares their performance with that of the manufacturing sector overall.
