This annual report provides supporting information to the main Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators report, which presents indicators for water quality, air quality and greenhouse gas emissions. This report provides contextual information on the human activities that have influenced the environmental indicators. Socio-economic information is divided into three broad categories: land, population and economy. Selected data from the Censuses of Population and Agriculture are also provided in the form of regional profiles for major drainage areas and sub-drainage areas of Canada. The indicators are intended to assist those in government responsible for developing policy and measuring performance, while also helping individual Canadians who want to know more about the trends in their environment.
The indicator reports from 2005 to 2007 can be found below. All later indicator reports can be found on Environment Canada's site: www.ec.gc.ca/indicateurs-indicators/.
More detail on some of the socio-economic information found in the Environment Canada indicator reports can be found here: National economic accounts: Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators

The term ecumene comes from the Greek word oikoumene , which means inhabited land or inhabited world. Geographers generally use the term to refer to land where people have made their permanent home, and to all work areas that are considered occupied and used for agricultural or any other economic purpose.
This working paper first examines the ecumene concept from a geographic viewpoint and highlights some of the geographic literature. It also examines the cartographic issues, such as the limitations of the choropleth map, and then provides an overview of Statistics Canada's use of the ecumene in its thematic mapping program. Finally, the paper provides details on the development of the population ecumene for the 2006 Census.

Crop producers were expected to move away from dependence on just a few traditional crops to better protect themselves from the income risks associated with price downturns and climatic events. Based on Statistics Canada survey data from Saskatchewan, there is only limited evidence to support this hypothesis, at least over the period 1994 to 1999.

This publication will be of interest to researchers in both the economic and environmental fields who want to familiarize themselves with the accounting concepts of the CSERA. It is a companion volume to Environment-economy indicators and detailed statistics (catalogue no. 16-200-XKE), another product in the Econnections series.
Statistics Canada has updated its 1997 documentation on environmental accounts, Econnections: Concepts, Sources and Methods of the Canadian System of Environmental and Resource Accounts, with publication of the Methodological Guide: Canadian System of Environmental-Economic Accounting.

Release date: 2004-06-09 - 4. They're Tilling That Field Behind the Mall ArchivedSurveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 96-328-M2004003Description:
This activity looks at the competition between agriculture and urban development for land around urban centres and the difficulties and advantages of farming close to urban areas. The pressure to build more housing in urban areas is strong, but such development takes some of Canada's best farmland out of production permanently. Should decisions on how this land is used be left solely to the market? Students will debate the issue.
