This Juristat examines the characteristics and socioeconomic circumstances of young offenders who participated in the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program in 2009/2010. Drawing on information from tax data and the 2016 Census of Population, this analysis provides information on economic and social marginalization which may have contributed to their offending, as well as some of the challenges they continued to face in young adulthood. In particular, differences between the circumstances of male and female offenders are shown.

Release date: 2020-02-25 - 43. Socioeconomic disparities in life and health expectancy among the household population in CanadaArticles and reports: 82-003-X202000100001Description:
This study uses the 1996 and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs), with a five-year mortality follow-up, to estimate the life expectancy (LE) of the household population. It also incorporates information from two national health surveys to estimate health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE). The objectives of this study are to examine LE, HALE and disparities in LE and HALE in the 1996 and 2011 cohorts at ages 25 and 65 for men and women, according to highest level of educational attainment and household income quintile; to examine these disparities according to the combination of education and income in the 2011 cohort; and to examine how education- and income-related disparities in LE and HALE changed over time.
Release date: 2020-01-15 - Articles and reports: 82-003-X201901200002Description:
The routine measurement of population health status indicators like mortality is important to assess progress in the reduction of inequalities. Previous studies of mortality inequalities have relied on area-based measures of socioeconomic indicators. A new series of census-mortality linked datasets has been created in Canada to quantify mortality inequalities based on individual-level data and examine whether these inequalities have changed over time. This study used the 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs) with five years of mortality follow-up. It estimated age-standardized mortality rates by sex according to income quintile and highest level of educational attainment categories for the household population aged 25 or older.

Release date: 2019-12-13 - Articles and reports: 11F0019M2019024Description:
The educational attainment of the Canadian population has been rising rapidly in recent decades. There is concern that educational expansion has outpaced demand, leading to an increased prevalence of over-education. Over-education is defined as educational qualification that exceeds what is required to adequately perform the job. This study uses census data to document the rising supply of university-educated workers by immigration status from 2001 to 2016. It further examines trends in over-education among university-educated workers who are recent immigrants (those who arrived in Canada 1 to 10 years before the census) and those who are Canadian-born youth (aged 25 to 34). For each population group, this study examines the extent to which the observed trend in over-education status is associated with changes in demographic characteristics and supply and demand factors.

Release date: 2023-11-06 - Public use microdata: 95M0007XDescription: Microdata files are unique among census products in that they give users access to unaggregated data. This makes the public use microdata files (PUMFs) powerful research tools. Each file contains anonymous individual responses on a large number of variables. The PUMF user can group and manipulate these variables to suit his/her own data and research requirements. Tabulations not included in other census products can be created or relationships between variables can be analysed by using different statistical tests. PUMFs provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people. All subject-matter covered by the census is included in the microdata files. However, to ensure the anonymity of the respondents, geographic identifiers have been restricted to the provinces/territories and large metropolitan areas. Microdata files have traditionally been disseminated on magnetic tape, which required access to a mainframe computer. For the first time, the 1991 PUMFs will also be available on CD-ROM for microcomputer applications. This file contains data based on a 3% of the population enumerated in the 1991 Census. It provides information on the demographic, social and economic characteristics of the Canadian population. The Individual File allows users to return to the base unit of the census, enabling them to group and manipulate the data to suit their own data and research requirements.
This product provides two basic tools to assist users in accessing and using the 1991 Census Public Use Microdata File - Individuals CD-ROM.

Release date: 2023-09-12 - Public use microdata: 95M0016XDescription: This file provides data on the characteristics of the population. The 2001 Census Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) contain samples of anonymous responses to the 2001 Census questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses. Three files are available: the Individuals File, the Families File, and the Households and Housing File.
Microdata files are unique among census products in that they give users access to non-aggregated data. The PUMFs user can group and manipulate these variables to suit data and research requirements. Tabulations excluded from other census products can be created or relationships between variables can be analysed using different statistical tests. PUMFs provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people.
Most of the subject matter covered by the census is included in the microdata files. To ensure the respondents' anonymity, geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces/territories and large metropolitan areas.
Note: Please be advised that errors have been detected in the data for two variables contained on the revised version of this CD-ROM. As well, we have added a unique record identifier called PPSORT, built/included in the file for administrative purposes only. The affected variables are: Income status (2000 low income cut-offs) (INCSTP) Ethnic origin (ETHNICRA) Further details can be found in the "Errata" file offered in several formats on the new, re-issued CD-ROM. - 4. The effect of parents’ education and income on the educational attainment of childhood immigrantsArticles and reports: 36-28-0001202300900002Description: Many immigrants move to countries such as Canada in part to provide better educational and economic opportunities for their children. For its part, Canada also looks to immigrants and their children to provide higher-level skills to the labour market. This paper examines the effect of the mother’s and father’s education on the likelihood of a childhood immigrant who arrived in Canada at age 17 or younger, completing postsecondary education. The paper further determines whether there is significant variation in these relationships among immigrants from different source regions.Release date: 2023-09-27
- Stats in brief: 11-627-M2023042Description: This infographic looks at the educational attainment of farm operators by field of study, gender and age group. It looks at how educational attainment differs between the three different Canadian-born Black populations, and how education along with other factors contributes to earnings differences between the different Black populations and between Black and non-Indigenous non-racialized populations.Release date: 2023-08-22
- Articles and reports: 81-595-M2023002Description: This fact sheet uses 2016 Census of Population data linked to the Remoteness Index to examine the relationship between remoteness and high school completion for First Nations people, Métis, and Inuit aged 19 to 45. The Remoteness index measures geographic proximity to service centers for each populated community, which is an important determinant of socio-economic, education, and health outcomes. This study attempts to disentangle factors relevant to educational attainment and shed light on the learning context of First Nations people, Métis, and Inuit.Release date: 2023-06-21
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202300500001Description: The increase in the number of job vacancies observed in Canada over the last few years has attracted considerable attention. - Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202300500003Description: The selection of highly educated immigrants is based in part on the premise that they can better adapt to the labour market and will have, on average, better economic outcomes than less-educated immigrants. Earlier research indicates that this is the case. However, some university-educated immigrants have a slow start in the initial years after immigration. Little Canadian research has considered whether these immigrants eventually catch up with similarly educated immigrants who have early economic success. Likewise, it is unknown whether they outperform less-educated immigrants. Using the Longitudinal Immigration Database, this study looks at the long-term economic outcomes of university-educated economic principal applicant immigrants who immigrated at the ages of 20 to 44 during the period from 1990 to 2014 by their earnings level in the initial years after immigration.Release date: 2023-05-24
