- Data Visualization: 71-607-X2023030Description: Using data from the Housing Economic Account, this data visualization tool analyzes the flows and stock of residential housing in value, as well as the stock of housing in units. Residential housing flows and stock can be visualized in current and real dollars, by assets (new construction, renovation and transfer cost) and by provinces and territories. Resources were developed for a junior high school, senior high school and introductory post-secondary audience. Curriculum links include grades 7 to 12 geography, social studies, biology, science and economics, as well as introductory post-secondary geography and environmental science.

The article "Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada" presents preliminary results achieved through a two-year interdepartmental project to develop experimental ecosystem accounts and the required statistical infrastructure. It provides an overview of ecosystem accounting and valuation and presents several measures of the quantity and quality of ecosystems and ecosystem goods and services (EGS). These measures focus on land cover, human landscape modification, ecosystem potential of the boreal forest, biomass extraction, marine and coastal EGS, and wetland EGS. The report also includes a case study on the Thousand Islands National Park exploring monetary valuation of EGS and concludes with a research agenda for future work on this topic.

The 2008-2009 recession was less severe for both output and jobs than the two previous recessions. While the disruption of global financial markets did lead to a record drop in exports and severe cuts in business investment, household demand did not recede as much as in previous downturns and led the recovery. Canada is the only G7 nation to have returned to its pre-recession level, led by private domestic demand.

While exports and corporate profits fell sharply due to the global recession, domestic spending was sustained by strong balance sheets and savings built up in previous years and a financial system that emerged largely unscathed from the crisis in the US and Europe. The industrial pattern of the recession in Canada was quite similar to previous recessions.
