Oil and gas exploration, development and production activities continue to grow in importance, making it essential that the appropriate level and growth of these activities are included in the measure of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Statistics Canada recently began incorporating results from the Quarterly Survey of Capital Expenditures – Oil and Gas Activities in sub-annual GDP statistics (for years 2011, 2013, 2014). This note provides a brief overview of the survey and the incorporation of its results when estimating quarterly investment.

The automotive retail sector is given a closer look because of its ability to dictate retail sales growth during the period. This study uses data from a fleet of Statistics Canada surveys, including Monthly Retail Trade Survey, Provincial Economic Accounts, New Motor Vehicle Sales, Canadian Vehicle Survey, Motor Vehicle Registration, and 2002 Homeowner Repairs and Renovations Survey.

In addition to an historical table, the publication tables present data by province, size of area of residence (urban/rural), household income group and expenditure level, type of dwelling, period of construction, age of reference person, and year the reference person moved to the dwelling.

The file contains information about landlord expenditures on privately owned rental dwellings in Canada. Expenditures are divided by type, as are the dwellings to which they apply. Other information includes the year in which the building was built, the number of months the landlord owned the building in 1995 and if expenditures were reported for condominium units.
