The purpose of this user guide is to define the concept of identical Dissemination Area (DA) clusters used in the Canadian Social Environment Typology (CanSET) and to give an overview of how the clusters can be used to explore DA level health and social inequalities. The user guide also offers information on how to use the new social environment clusters to understand social and health inequalities in more populous areas in Canada.

The Canadian Social Environment Typology (CanSET) is a geographic classification tool to compare neighbourhoods across Canadian Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations. The CanSET was developed by the Centre for Population Health Data (CPHD) at Statistics Canada. It provides three levels of neighbourhood classifications based on combinations of 30 socioeconomic, demographic and ethnocultural variables from the Census of population 2016. Each social environment cluster is a group of similar dissemination areas and represents a unique neighbourhood type. The CanSET data comes with definitions of each neighbourhood type so that users can compare health and social outcomes by neighbourhood characteristics. Description:

The Standard Geographical Classification (SGC) provides a systematic classification structure that categorizes all of the geographic area of Canada. The SGC is the official classification used in the Census of Population and other Statistics Canada surveys.

The classification is organized in two volumes: Volume I, The Classification and Volume II, Reference Maps.

Volume I describes the classification and related standard geographic areas and place names. It provides names and codes for the geographical regions of Canada, provinces and territories, census divisions (counties, regional municipalities) and census subdivisions (municipalities). The names and codes for census metropolitan areas, census agglomerations, census metropolitan influenced zones, economic regions, census agricultural regions and census consolidated subdivisions are shown in the classification variants of the SGC. Volume I explains the changes between the current version of the SGC and the previous version that impact upon the classification, such as changes in name, type or code, and indicates how the new and old codes relate to one another.

The Census Tract Reference Maps, by Census Metropolitan Areas or Census Agglomerations cover all census metropolitan areas and the census agglomerations in the census tract program. The maps display boundaries and names of census tracts and census subdivisions, designated places and their names, as well as core, secondary core, fringe and rural areas within census metropolitan areas or census agglomerations. Inset maps are available to show detail for the more concentrated areas. The maps also display street network and other visible features such as railroads, rivers and lakes. The maps vary in scale and size. Embedded links enable users to link to respective dissemination area by census tract maps when viewing the maps on the Internet.

For selected geographies, the tables provide percentage change in the population counts between 2016 and 2011. Data are also provided for land area and population density. Using 2011 Census data, this profile provides a statistical overview of the age and sex as well as families, households, marital status, structural type of dwelling and collectives and language characteristics for census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations. In the census product line, groups of related variables are referred to as 'release components of profiles.' These are made available with the major releases of variables of the census cycle, starting with age and sex. Together, they will form a complete Census Profile of all the variables for each level of geography, plus one cumulative profile for the dissolved census subdivisions. Residential dissimilarity describes the extent to which one population group lives apart from another in a shared urban space. This study uses data from the 2016 Census to examine the housing, income and residential dissimilarity of the Indigenous population living in private households in the 49 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations (CAs) that were large enough to be divided into census tracts, and provides a short description of neighbourhoods with a large concentration of Indigenous people.

Using 2001 Census data, this paper investigates the extent to which the urban-rural gap in the earnings of employed workers is associated with human capital composition and agglomeration economies. Both factors have been theoretically and empirically linked to urban-rural earnings differences. Agglomeration economies-the productivity enhancing effects of the geographic concentration of workers and firms-may underlie these differences as they may be stronger in larger urban centres. But human capital composition may also drive the urban-rural earnings gap if workers with higher levels of education and/or experience are more prevalent in cities. The analysis finds that up to one-half of urban-rural earnings differences are related to human capital composition. It also demonstrates that agglomeration economies related to city size are associated with earnings levels, but their influence is significantly reduced by the inclusion of controls for human capital.

The 2001 Census defines 27 census metropolitan area (CMAs) and 19 census agglomerations (CAs) with census tracts. This working paper includes three maps for each of these CMAs and CAs. The first map shows the boundary of the CMA/CA and the boundaries of the census subdivision (CSD) components of the CMA/CA for the 1996 Census. The second map shows the transition from 1996 to 2001 (with boundary changes highlighted), and the third map shows the CMA/CA (and component CSDs) as it is defined for the 2001 Census. The paper describes various factors that can result in changes to the boundaries of CMAs and CAs. This report highlights the results of the geography portion of the 2001 Census consultation process. At the June 1998 federal-provincial conference session on the 2001 Census, geography was described as the "cornerstone" of the census. Based on the submissions received in the past year, many users feel the same way. It is the standard geographic areas that determine the framework in which the data will be released. It is the users, through the consultation process, who influence the changes to the standard geographic areas that are recommended for each census.
