  • Public use microdata: 82M0009X
    Description:

The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) used the Labour Force Survey sampling frame to draw the initial sample of approximately 20,000 households starting in 1994 and for the sample top-up this third cycle. The survey is conducted every two years. The sample collection is distributed over four quarterly periods followed by a follow-up period and the whole process takes a year. In each household, some limited health information is collected from all household members and one person in each household is randomly selected for a more in-depth interview.

The survey is designed to collect information on the health of the Canadian population and related socio-demographic information. The first cycle of data collection began in 1994, and continues every second year thereafter. The survey is designed to produce both cross-sectional and longitudinal estimates. The questionnaires includes content related to health status, use of health services, determinants of health, a health index, chronic conditions and activity restrictions. The use of health services is probed through visits to health care providers, both traditional and non-traditional, and the use of drugs and other mediciations. Health determinants include smoking, alcohol use and physical activity. A special focus content for this cycle includes family medical history with questions about certain chronic conditions among immediate family members and when they were acquired. As well, a section on self care has also been included this cycle. The socio-demographic information includes age, sex, education, ethnicity, household income and labour force status.

  • Table: 82-567-X
    Description:

The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) is designed to enhance the understanding of the processes affecting health. The survey collects cross-sectional as well as longitudinal data. In 1994/95 the survey interviewed a panel of 17,276 individuals, then returned to interview them a second time in 1996/97. The response rate for these individuals was 96% in 1996/97. Data collection from the panel will continue for up to two decades. For cross-sectional purposes, data were collected for a total of 81,000 household residents in all provinces (except people on Indian reserves or on Canadian Forces bases) in 1996/97.

This overview illustrates the variety of information available by presenting data on perceived health, chronic conditions, injuries, repetitive strains, depression, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, consultations with medical professionals, use of medications and use of alternative medicine.

    Description:

This article compares associations between body mass index categories based on self-reported versus measured data with selected health conditions. The goal is to determine if the misclassification resulting from the use of self-reported data alters associations between excess weight and these health conditions. The analysis is based on 2,667 respondents aged 40 or older from the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey.

    Description:

Based on a representative sample of the Canadian population, this article quantifies the bias resulting from the use of self-reported rather than directly measured height, weight and body mass index. The analysis is based on 4,567 respondents to the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey, who provided self-reported values for height and weight and were then measured.

    Description:

We use a robust Bayesian method to analyze data with possibly nonignorable nonresponse and selection bias. A robust logistic regression model is used to relate the response indicators (Bernoulli random variable) to the covariates, which are available for everyone in the finite population. This relationship can adequately explain the difference between respondents and nonrespondents for the sample. This robust model is obtained by expanding the standard logistic regression model to a mixture of Student's distributions, thereby providing propensity scores (selection probability) which are used to construct adjustment cells. The nonrespondents' values are filled in by drawing a random sample from a kernel density estimator, formed from the respondents' values within the adjustment cells. Prediction uses a linear spline rank-based regression of the response variable on the covariates by areas, sampling the errors from another kernel density estimator; thereby further robustifying our method. We use Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to fit our model. The posterior distribution of a quantile of the response variable is obtained within each sub-area using the order statistic over all the individuals (sampled and nonsampled). We compare our robust method with recent parametric methods

    Description:

This study investigates factors associated with obesity in Canada and the U.S., using data from the 2002-03 Joint Canada/United States Survey of Health, a telephone survey conducted jointly by Statistics Canada and the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. Essentially the same questionnaire was administered in both countries at the same time, yielding a data set that provided unprecedented comparability of national estimates from the two countries. Analysis of empirical distributions of body mass index (BMI) show that American women are appreciably heavier than Canadian women, whereas the distributions of BMI are almost identical for American men and Canadian men. Factors are investigated that may account for the differences between women.

    Description:

Growth curves are used by health professionals to determine whether the growth of a child or a foetus, for example, is within normal limits. The growth charts currently used in Canada for height, weight and body mass index (BMI) are based on US data. Child growth curves can now be generated from the latest available data in Canada. One way of estimating and drawing growth curves is the Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) method. The method has been used in various studies by the World Health Organization, the United Kingdom and the United States to generate reference growth curves for children. In this article, the LMS method is used to estimate growth curves in BMI percentiles from weighted cross-sectional data provided by cycle 2.2 of the Canadian Community Health Survey. This article is about the child BMI, one of the anthropometric measures most commonly used to assess growth and obesity.
