    Description:

    The Survey of Innovation 2003 surveyed establishments in 36 services industries with a view to better understand innovation in the service sector. The services industries surveyed included information and communications technology industries (ICT); selected professional, scientific and technical services, selected natural resources industries and selected transportation industries. Results from the Survey of Innovation 2003, which examined innovation in selected service industries, show that establishments in ICT service industries are most likely to be innovative. In Canada, the three industries with the highest rates of innovation were all ICT industries.

    This publication is part of a series of working papers based on Statistics Canada's Survey of Innovation 1999. It was the first study of innovations in selected natural resource industries. The survey uses a systems approach to understanding advances in the forest sector and describes a model for the Forest Sector System. Descriptive statistics and statistical tables present data for some of the industries included in the system. The text explores innovations produced by forest sector firms, the objectives of the innovations, as well as how knowledge is generated and transmitted within this system.

The use of CCRA data results in a small understatement in total figures for the most recent years reported.

    The statistics presented in this bulletin are derived from our latest survey of research and development activities in Canadian industry. In 1997, a decision was made to reduce response burden by eliminating the short survey forms in favour of using administrative data. Biotechnology data are not currently available from administrative data. Therefore, only those research and development performers with over one million dollars of intramural research and development expenditures are included in these statistics. Based on 1995, the last year of full coverage, 87.6% of biotechnology research and development expenditures were made by these large performers, which represented 24% of all companies reporting biotechnology research and development activities.

Sort help

How are the results ordered?

The Sort by feature provides three options:

  • By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
  • By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
  • By title – sorts results alphabetically.

  • By most popular – gives priority to results that are most frequently selected by users, followed by the most recent.
