    This comprehensive source on international service transactions contains aggregate and detailed breakouts by type of service each year since 1989. Major categories are travel, transportation, commercial and government services. Commercial services, comprising a range of business and professional services are categorized by geographical area (United States, European Union and all other countries), industry, country of control (Canada, United States, other) and whether or not the service was with foreign affiliated companies; these details are presented from 1996.

    New with the 1999 issue are annual breakdowns from 1991 of total services for 8 additional countries beyond the 47 already published.     Description:

    The "Trends and Conditions in Census Metropolitan Areas" series of reports provides key background information on Canadian census metropolitan areas (CMAs) for the period 1981 to 2001. Based primarily on census data, this series provides substantial information and analysis on several topics: low income, health, immigration, culture, housing, labour markets, industrial structure, mobility, public transit and commuting, and Aboriginal people. This final assessment summarizes the major findings of the eight reports and evaluates what has been learned. It points out that the series has three key contributions. First, it details how place matters. Census metropolitan areas differ greatly in many indicators, and their economic and social differences are important factors that define them. Accordingly, policy prescriptions affecting cities may need to reflect this diversity. Second, the series contributes substantially to the amount of data and analysis needed to make accurate policy assessments of what may be ailing in Canada's largest cities and where each problem is most acute. Third, it provides benchmarks against which future data 'most notably data from the 2006 Census' can be examined. This summary also briefly discusses some subjects which were not covered in the series, identifying these as data gaps, or areas where more research is needed.

    The Survey of Innovation 2003 surveyed establishments in 36 services industries with a view to better understand innovation in the service sector. The services industries surveyed included information and communications technology industries (ICT); selected professional, scientific and technical services, selected natural resources industries and selected transportation industries. Results from the Survey of Innovation 2003, which examined innovation in selected service industries, show that establishments in ICT service industries are most likely to be innovative. In Canada, the three industries with the highest rates of innovation were all ICT industries.

    Self-employment is more common in rural than urban Canada. In 2001, about one in four workers in rural areas, villages and small towns earned at least some of their income from self-employment, compared with only one in six in Canada as a whole. Of course, farming is a key element explaining high self-employment rates in rural and small town Canada. But although farm self-employment remains a key source of income and employment for many, its importance has declined and self-employment activity on the non-farm side has been increasing rapidly.

    The forces driving self-employment in smaller labour markets may be complex, but there is no doubt that entrepreneurship is thriving in rural Canada, despite the waning importance of farm self-employment. This article uses data from the Census of Population to describe non-farm self-employment among workers aged 20 to 64 living in Canada's rural areas and small towns.

    The collection of firms producing environmental goods and delivering environmental services constitutes the 'environment industry.' This industry has grown significantly in the past 20 years and stands to continue this development in the future as emerging issues such as the level of greenhouse gas emissions are addressed.

    An important aspect in the evaluation of the industry's performance is in the area of job creation and employment generation. Related to the challenges involved in classifying firms to the environment industry is the issue of identifying the employees who work in environment-related activities. Currently, the published data on employment include only the total employment of those businesses producing environmental goods and services, i.e., employees who worked in the production/provision of goods and services that have both environmental and non-environmental applications.

    Description:

    Remote Data Access (RDA) is a pilot project of the Centre for Education Statistics. Under the program, researchers can write and test their own computer programs using a file with artificial data. Then they can send these programs via the Internet to Statistics Canada, where they will be run on the microdata file. The results are returned to the client.

    For the moment, the only survey file available is the 1998 Adult Education and Training Survey. However, the program will soon be extended to the 2000 Program for International Assessment and 2000 Youth in Transition Survey.

    This service is an alternative to Statistics Canada's Research Data Centres and regional offices, which are not always accessible to researchers. At the outset, Remote Data Access is available free of charge. There will be a minimal charge after an evaluation period of about three to six months. RDA is available to any researcher, provided Statistics Canada has approved their project.

    This working paper presents a methodology to measure remoteness at the community level. The method takes into account some of the recent literature on the subject, as well as new computational opportunities provided by the integration of official statistics with data from non-official statistical sources. The approach that was used in the computations accounts for multiple points of access to services; it also establishes a continuum between communities with different transportation infrastructures and connectivity while at the same time retaining the information on the community transportation infrastructures in the database. In addition, a method to implement accessibility measures to selected services is also outlined and a sample of accessibility measures are computed.

    The article "Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada" presents preliminary results achieved through a two-year interdepartmental project to develop experimental ecosystem accounts and the required statistical infrastructure. It provides an overview of ecosystem accounting and valuation and presents several measures of the quantity and quality of ecosystems and ecosystem goods and services (EGS). These measures focus on land cover, human landscape modification, ecosystem potential of the boreal forest, biomass extraction, marine and coastal EGS, and wetland EGS. The report also includes a case study on the Thousand Islands National Park exploring monetary valuation of EGS and concludes with a research agenda for future work on this topic.

    This Juristat article analyses residential facilities in Canada that offered shelter to abused women in 2010. It presents information on the different types of facilities, the number of annual admissions, the reasons that women seek shelter and the variety of services offered to clients. In addition, this article examines the use of shelters that offer culturally sensitive services to Aboriginal people, living both on and off reserves. The data for this article was collected by the 2010 Transition Home Survey (THS), a census of residential facilities for female victims of abuse conducted by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics as part of the federal government's Family Violence Initiative. Annual admissions and expenditures information pertain to a 12-month period over 2009/2010, while other admissions and client characteristics are based on a one-day "snapshot" date of April 15, 2010. Comparisons using time-series data from the THS Trend File are also included. The THS Trend File contains only those facilities that have participated in each cycle of the survey since the 2002 survey cycle.

    Description:

    The North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) is the departmental standard for the classification of products (goods and services). The classification is a joint project of the national statistical agencies of Canada, Mexico and the United States. However, Statistics Canada has created new classification items for cannabis products in NAPCS Canada V2.0 that are unique to Canada. NAPCS is used to produce product statistics on a variety of topics, including the value of outputs of industries, the consumption by businesses and households, the value of imports and exports, and the movement of industrial and raw material prices.

    NAPCS Canada 2017 Version 2.0 comprises definitions for its 5,033 categories. At the lowest level of the classification, definitions include a descriptive text, as well as illustrative examples, inclusions and exclusions where appropriate.

    This series includes five general reference products - the Preview of Products and Services; the Catalogue; the Dictionary; the Handbook and the Technical Reports - as well as geography reference products - GeoSuite and Reference Maps.

    Product description

    Technical Reports examine the quality of data from the 1996 Census, a large and complex undertaking. While considerable effort was taken to ensure high quality standards throughout each step, the results are subject to a certain degree of error. Each report looks at the collection and processing operations and presents results from data evaluation, as well as notes on historical comparability.

    Technical Reports are aimed at moderate and sophisticated users but are written in a manner which could make them useful to all census data users. Most of the technical reports have been cancelled, with the exception of Age, Sex, Marital Status and Common-law Status, Coverage and Sampling and Weighting. These reports will be available as bilingual publications as well as being available in both official languages on the Internet as free products.

    This report deals with coverage errors, which occured when persons, households, dwellings or families were missed by the 1996 Census or enumerated in error. Coverage errors are one of the most important types of error since they affect not only the accuracy of the counts of the various census universes but also the accuracy of all of the census data describing the characteristics of these universes. With this information, users can determine the risks involved in basing conclusions or decisions on census data.
