  • 18. Examining the Factorial Validity of Selected Modules from the Canadian Survey of Experiences with Primary Health Care Archived

    In this study, I examine the factorial validity of selected modules from the Canadian Survey of Experiences with Primary Health Care (CSE-PHC), in order to determine the potential for combining the items within each module into summary indices representing global primary health care concepts. The modules examined were: Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC), Patient Activation (PA), Managing Own Health Care (MOHC), and Confidence in the Health Care System (CHCS). Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on each module to assess the degree to which multiple observed items reflected the presence of common latent factors. While a four-factor model was initially specified for the PACIC instrument on the basis of priory theory and research, it did not fit the data well; rather, a revised two-factor model was found to be most appropriate. These two factors were labelled: "Whole Person Care" and "Coordination of Care". The remaining modules studied here (i.e., PA, MOHC, and CHCS) were all well-represented by single-factor models. The results suggest that the original factor structure of the PACIC developed within studies using clinical samples does not hold in general populations, although the precise reasons for this are not clear. Further empirical investigation will be required to shed more light on this discrepancy. The two factors identified here for the PACIC, as well as the single factors produced for the PA, MOHC, and CHCS could be used as the basis of summary indices for use in further analyses with the CSE-PHC.

    This table is part of the topic "Education in Canada: School Attendance and Levels of Schooling," which presents data on school attendance and the highest level of schooling Canadians have attained, and data on certificates, degrees or diplomas they have been granted. These data can be used to track the educational qualifications of the labour force in general, and of specific groups such as women or immigrants. These data can also be used to measure the link between level of schooling and paid employment.

    "School attendance" refers to either full-time or part-time attendance at school, college or university during the nine-month period between September 2000 and May 2001. It is counted only for courses that could be used as credits towards a certificate, diploma or degree.

    Description:

    The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) used the Labour Force Survey sampling frame to draw the initial sample of approximately 20,000 households starting in 1994 and for the sample top-up this third cycle. The survey is conducted every two years. The sample collection is distributed over four quarterly periods followed by a follow-up period and the whole process takes a year. In each household, some limited health information is collected from all household members and one person in each household is randomly selected for a more in-depth interview.

    The survey is designed to collect information on the health of the Canadian population and related socio-demographic information. The first cycle of data collection began in 1994, and continues every second year thereafter. The survey is designed to produce both cross-sectional and longitudinal estimates. The questionnaires includes content related to health status, use of health services, determinants of health, a health index, chronic conditions and activity restrictions. The use of health services is probed through visits to health care providers, both traditional and non-traditional, and the use of drugs and other mediciations. Health determinants include smoking, alcohol use and physical activity. A special focus content for this cycle includes family medical history with questions about certain chronic conditions among immediate family members and when they were acquired. As well, a section on self care has also been included this cycle. The socio-demographic information includes age, sex, education, ethnicity, household income and labour force status.

After the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, NCHS adapted NAMCS methodology to assess the impacts of COVID-19 on office-based physicians, including: shortages of personal protective equipment; COVID-19 testing in physician offices; providers testing positive for COVID-19; and telemedicine use during the pandemic.     A population needs-based health care resource allocation model was developed and applied using age, sex and health status of populations to measure population need for health care in Ontario. To develop the model, provincial data on self-assessed health and health service utilization by age and sex from 62,413 respondents to the 1990 Ontario Health Survey (OHS) were used in combination with provincial health care expenditure data for the fiscal year 1995/96 by age and sex. The model was limited to the services that were covered in the OHS (general practitioner, specialist physician, optometry, physiotherapy, chiropractic and acute hospital). The distribution of utilization and expenditures between age-sex-health status categories was used to establish appropriate health care resource shares for each age-sex-health status combination. These resource shares were then applied to geographic populations using age, sex and health status data from the OHS together with more recent population estimates to determine the needs-based health care resource allocation for each area. Total dollar allocations were restricted to sum to the 1995/96 provincial budget and were compared with 1995/96 allocations to determine the extent to which Ontario allocations are consistent with the relative needs of the area populations.

  • You can delete some or all of the keywords from your search string.

  • Quotes around keywords limit the search to a specific phrase.

    • For example, “labour force survey” will limit results to products containing this phrase.

  • Use “or” between keywords to obtain results that contain one or more search terms.

    • For example, labour or­ force or survey will limit results to products containing any or all of these words.

How does the search work?

  • This search looks for results that have your query term in the title, description, subject, geography, product number or other information about the product.

    • For example, when searching the term ‘Diseases’, all results with the word ‘Diseases’ in the title, description or tagged the subject appear.

  • The text within an article or publication are not searched. For full text searching of articles, use the site search.

How are the results ordered?

The Sort by feature provides three options:

  • By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
  • By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
  • By title – sorts results alphabetically.
