- Articles and reports: 11F0019M2024002Description: Immigrant-owned businesses were more likely to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic than other businesses, as they were more concentrated in industries requiring in-person contact and were smaller in scale. To support businesses affected by the pandemic, the Government of Canada launched various COVID-19 liquidity support programs, including the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA), the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) and the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA). These programs were designed to help affected businesses by partially covering their main expenses, such as wages, rent and property expenses.Release date: 2024-03-06
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400200001Description: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted several issues among health care workers in Canada’s long-term care and seniors’ (LTCS) homes, including labour shortages, staff retention difficulties, overcrowding, and precarious working conditions. There is currently a lack of information on the health, well-being, and working conditions of health care workers in LTCS homes—many of them immigrants—and a limited understanding of the relationship between them. Using data from the 2021 Survey on Health Care Workers’ Experiences During the Pandemic, this paper examines differences between immigrant and non-immigrant workers’ health outcomes and precarious working conditions during the pandemic.Release date: 2024-02-21
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400200002Description: The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted routine and preventive dental services until precautions could be implemented to limit virus transmission. Access to services for dental emergencies was maintained. This study describes self-reported access to oral health care services in Canada during the first 12-month period of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the reported need for routine or emergency oral health care. It also compares the access to, and the unmet need for, dental services by various sociodemographic characteristics, including by province.Release date: 2024-02-21
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202400100002Description: The increase in work from home triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic directly decreased public transit use. While this increase in work from home likely reduced commuting and greenhouse gas emissions caused by transportation, it also put downward pressure on the revenues and ridership of urban public transit systems. This article assesses the degree to which the increase in work from home observed in Canada in recent years may have reduced the number of public transit commuters from 2016 to 2023 in urban areas.Release date: 2024-01-24
- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202301100001Description: At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an overrepresentation of males in COVID-19 deaths worldwide, with Canada reporting more female COVID-19 deaths. This study examines the overrepresentation of female COVID-19 deaths in Canada, with an immigration lens. This study also evaluates whether there is a sex difference in COVID-19 deaths by immigrant status in Canada and, if so, for which age groups and in which provinces or census metropolitan areas (CMAs).Release date: 2023-11-15
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202301000002Description: To alleviate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on businesses, the Government of Canada launched various liquidity support programs. This study examines the use of four emergency government support programs—the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA), the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) and the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA)—by the child care businesses that qualified for them.Release date: 2023-10-25
- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202301000005Description: The COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial impact on business dynamics, leading to the temporary or permanent closure of many businesses. Using a newly developed linked database, this paper presents trends in exits, insolvency proposals and bankruptcies across business and financial characteristics among corporations from 2004 to 2020.Release date: 2023-10-25
