    Description:

This chapter of Women in Canada presents a life course perspective of the physical, mental and social health of girls and women in Canada. It is intended to provide a summary of various aspects of women’s health, based on available recent survey and administrative data, as well as findings from published research papers and reports. It begins with a general overview of female health in Canada - with a look at the social determinants of health and the health of women who are immigrants to Canada - followed by four sections that describe female health in childhood, in adolescence, in adulthood, and at older ages. Each of these sections includes information on various health behaviours, disease and chronic conditions, and mental health. Sexual activity and reproduction are also examined, beginning in adolescence.

Description: Previous studies examining the cardiometabolic risks associated with physical activity (PA) in workers have predominantly used self-reported measures. Little is known about workers’ distinct daily PA patterns and whether these are linked with cardiometabolic risks. This study examined associations between patterns of workers’ accelerometer-measured daily PA and four markers of cardiometabolic health. Furthermore, the study examined similarities and differences between younger compared to middle-aged and older workers, and between men and women, to understand whether these groups are associated with different cardiometabolic risks.

    Description:

Demographers are facing increasing pressure to disaggregate their estimates and forecasts by characteristics such as region, ethnicity, and income. Traditional demographic methods were designed for large samples, and perform poorly with disaggregated data. Methods based on formal Bayesian statistical models offer better performance. We illustrate with examples from a long-term project to develop Bayesian approaches to demographic estimation and forecasting. In our first example, we estimate mortality rates disaggregated by age and sex for a small population. In our second example, we simultaneously estimate and forecast obesity prevalence disaggregated by age. We conclude by addressing two traditional objections to the use of Bayesian methods in statistical agencies.
