    Description: The validity of survival estimates from cancer registry data depends, in part, on the identification of the deaths of deceased cancer patients. People whose deaths are missed seemingly live on forever and are informally referred to as “immortals”, and their presence in registry data can result in inflated survival estimates. This study assesses the issue of immortals in the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) using a recently proposed method that compares the survival of long-term survivors of cancers for which “statistical” cure has been reported with that of similar people from the general population.

    Description:

    Changes in health status may affect not just the individuals who experience such changes, but also their family members. For example, if the main earner in a family loses his or her ability to generate income due to a health shock, it invariably affects the financial situation of the spouse and other dependents. In addition, spouses and working-age children may themselves increase or reduce their labour supply to make up for the lost income (“added worker effect”) or care for a sick family member (“caregiver effect”). Since consumption smoothing and self-insurance occur at the household level, the financial effects of health for other family members have important policy implications. To shed light on such effects, this study analyzes how one spouse’s cancer diagnosis affects the employment and earnings of the other spouse and (before-tax) total family income using administrative data from Canada.

    The Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) represents a collaborative effort between Statistics Canada and the thirteen provincial and territorial cancer registries to create a single database to report annually on cancer incidence and survival at the national and jurisdictional level. While gains have been made to ensure high quality, standardized, and comparable data, the CCR currently lacks information on cancer treatment. The Canadian Council of Cancer Registries (CCCR) identified the need to capture treatment data at the national level as a key strategic priority for 2013/2014. Record linkage was identified as one possible approach to fill this information gap.

    The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of using record linkage to add cancer treatment information for selected cancers: breast, colorectal and prostate. The objectives are twofold: to assess the quality of the linkage processes and the validity of using linked data to estimate cancer treatment rates at the provincial level. The study is based on the Canadian Cancer Registry (2005 to 2008) linked to the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS) for four provinces (Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island). The linkage was proposed by Statistics Canada, the CCCR and the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). The linkage was approved and conducted at Statistics Canada.

    Description:

    The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) is designed to enhance the understanding of the processes affecting health. The survey collects cross-sectional as well as longitudinal data. In 1994/95 the survey interviewed a panel of 17,276 individuals, then returned to interview them a second time in 1996/97. The response rate for these individuals was 96% in 1996/97. Data collection from the panel will continue for up to two decades. For cross-sectional purposes, data were collected for a total of 81,000 household residents in all provinces (except people on Indian reserves or on Canadian Forces bases) in 1996/97.

    This overview illustrates the variety of information available by presenting data on perceived health, chronic conditions, injuries, repetitive strains, depression, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, consultations with medical professionals, use of medications and use of alternative medicine.

    Description:

    In this paper we study small area estimation using area level models. We first consider the Fay-Herriot model (Fay and Herriot 1979) for the case of smoothed known sampling variances and the You-Chapman model (You and Chapman 2006) for the case of sampling variance modeling. Then we consider hierarchical Bayes (HB) spatial models that extend the Fay-Herriot and You-Chapman models by capturing both the geographically unstructured heterogeneity and spatial correlation effects among areas for local smoothing. The proposed models are implemented using the Gibbs sampling method for fully Bayesian inference. We apply the proposed models to the analysis of health survey data and make comparisons among the HB model-based estimates and direct design-based estimates. Our results have shown that the HB model-based estimates perform much better than the direct estimates. In addition, the proposed area level spatial models achieve smaller CVs than the Fay-Herriot and You-Chapman models, particularly for the areas with three or more neighbouring areas. Bayesian model comparison and model fit analysis are also presented.

    Description:

    The ÉLDEQ initiated a special data gathering project in March 2008 with the collection of biological materials from 1,973 families. During a typical visit, a nurse collects a blood or saliva sample from the selected child, makes a series of measurements (anthropometry, pulse rate and blood pressure) and administers questionnaires. Planned and supervised by the Institut de la Statistique du Québec (ISQ) and the Université de Montréal, the study is being conducted in cooperation with two private firms and a number of hospitals. This article examines the choice of collection methods, the division of effort among the various players, the sequence of communications and contacts with respondents, the tracing of families who are not contacted, and follow-up on the biological samples. Preliminary field results are also presented.

    Based on a representative sample of the Canadian population, this article quantifies the bias resulting from the use of self-reported rather than directly measured height, weight and body mass index (BMI). Associations between BMI categories and selected health conditions are compared to see if the misclassification resulting from the use of self-reported data alters associations between obesity and obesity-related health conditions. The analysis is based on 4,567 respondents to the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) who, during a face-to-face interview, provided self-reported values for height and weight and were then measured by trained interviewers. Based on self-reported data, a substantial proportion of individuals with excess body weight were erroneously placed in lower BMI categories. This misclassification resulted in elevated associations between overweight/obesity and morbidity.

    A 24-hour dietary recall from 16,190 respondents aged 12 or older to the Canadian Community Health Survey - Nutrition was used to determine energy and nutrient intake. To identify plausible respondents, a confidence interval was applied to total energy expenditure derived from equations developed by the Institute of Medicine. Estimates of energy and nutrient intake for plausible respondents were compared with estimates for all respondents.

    Description:

    The number of calls in a telephone survey is used as an indicator of how difficult an intended respondent is to reach. This permits a probabilistic division of the non-respondents into non-susceptibles (those who will always refuse to respond), and the susceptible non-respondents (those who were not available to respond) in a model of the non-response. Further, it permits stochastic estimation of the views of the latter group and an evaluation of whether the non-response is ignorable for inference about the dependent variable. These ideas are implemented on the data from a survey in Metropolitan Toronto of attitudes toward smoking in the workplace. Using a Bayesian model, the posterior distribution of the model parameters is sampled by Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. The results reveal that the non-response is not ignorable and those who do not respond are twice as likely to favor unrestricted smoking in the workplace as are those who do.

    Since 2007/2008, Statistics Canada has centred analysis of data holdings related to health as well as our program of dissemination of health research within the new Health Information and Research Division (HIRD).

    The new division has launched a comprehensive approach to analytical planning including environmental scanning and consultation; establishment of strategic multi-year priorities for health research at Statistics Canada; a process of project selection and review that ensures that analytical effort addresses our priorities; metrics to measure our adherence to priorities and the impact of our analytical effort; and communication and dissemination of analytical plans.

    This multi-year analytical plan identifies the key high-level priority areas for Statistics Canada's investment in health research for 2008/2009 to 2010/2011, and serves as a blueprint for subsequent operational research planning.
