The 2001 Census Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) contain samples of anonymous responses to the 2001 Census questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses. Three files are available: the Individuals File, the Families File, and the Households and Housing File.

Microdata files are unique among census products in that they give users access to non-aggregated data. The PUMFs user can group and manipulate these variables to suit data and research requirements. Tabulations excluded from other census products can be created or relationships between variables can be analysed using different statistical tests. PUMFs provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people.

Most of the subject matter covered by the census is included in the microdata files. To ensure the respondents' anonymity, geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces/territories and large metropolitan areas.

As well, we have added a unique record identifier called PPSORT, built/included in the file for administrative purposes only. The International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) was a seven-country initiative conducted in the fall of 1994. Its goal: to create comparable literacy profiles across national, linguistic and cultural boundaries. The survey also offers the world's only source of comparative data on participation in adult education and training. The results, published in the report "Literacy, economy and society: Results of the first International Adult Literacy Survey" (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Statistics Canada, 1995), demonstrated a strong plausible link between literacy and a country's economic potential. Since then, a second and a third round of data collection of IALS were conducted in an additional 16 countries in 1996 (See "Literacy skills for the knowledge society: Further results of the International Adult Literacy Survey" (OECD and Human Resources Development Canada, 1997)) and in 1998 (See "Literacy in the information age: Final report of the International Adult Literacy Survey" (OECD and Statistics Canada, 2000)). Several thematic reports and international comparative reports were published following these second and third waves of data collection. In total, IALS includes literacy data pertaining to 23 countries or regions around the world.

The Postal Code^OM Conversion File Plus (PCCF+) is a SAS© control program and set of associated datasets derived from the Postal Code^OM Conversion File (PCCF), a Postal Code^OM population weight file, the Geographic Attribute File, Health Region boundary files, and other supplementary data.
