Sugar beets, significantly established in Canada in the first half of the 20th century, continue to sweeten things for farmers in Ontario and Alberta, according to Census of Agriculture data. Although Canada's sugar beet area in 2006, at 19,488 hectares, is only half the 1951 peak, the crop continues to thrive in Alberta, and has made a comeback in Ontario, a province where it had not been significant for decades.

The last decade of the Innovation Analysis Bulletin (IAB) tells the story of the evolution of the Science, Innovation and Electronic Information Division (SIEID) and its precursor, the Science and Technology Redesign Project. This includes measurement of research and development resources allocated to the formal generation of knowledge (research and development); the use and commercialization of intellectual property of universities, government laboratories and businesses; the activity of innovation; and the adoption and use of advanced manufacturing technologies, biotechnologies, information communication technologies (ICTs), knowledge management practices, nanotechnologies, and emerging technologies.

The term ecumene comes from the Greek word oikoumene , which means inhabited land or inhabited world. Geographers generally use the term to refer to land where people have made their permanent home, and to all work areas that are considered occupied and used for agricultural or any other economic purpose.
This working paper first examines the ecumene concept from a geographic viewpoint and highlights some of the geographic literature. It also examines the cartographic issues, such as the limitations of the choropleth map, and then provides an overview of Statistics Canada's use of the ecumene in its thematic mapping program. Finally, the paper provides details on the development of the population ecumene for the 2006 Census.
