The 2002 Immigration Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) replaced the Immigration Act, 1976 as the primary legislation guiding immigration in Canada. This article summarizes results from a recent study that compared the long-term use of social assistance among resettled refugees arriving under pre-IRPA guidelines (1997 to 2001), during the transition period (2002 to 2004), and post-IRPA (2005 to 2009). The authors used the Longitudinal immigration database (IMDB) to determine whether resettled refugees arriving after the introduction of IRPA were more likely to rely on social assistance than earlier cohorts.

Release date: 2011-07-20 - 6. Shelters for abused women in Canada, 2010 ArchivedArticles and reports: 85-002-X201100111495Geography: CanadaDescription:
This Juristat article analyses residential facilities in Canada that offered shelter to abused women in 2010. It presents information on the different types of facilities, the number of annual admissions, the reasons that women seek shelter and the variety of services offered to clients. In addition, this article examines the use of shelters that offer culturally sensitive services to Aboriginal people, living both on and off reserves. The data for this article was collected by the 2010 Transition Home Survey (THS), a census of residential facilities for female victims of abuse conducted by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics as part of the federal government's Family Violence Initiative. Annual admissions and expenditures information pertain to a 12-month period over 2009/2010, while other admissions and client characteristics are based on a one-day "snapshot" date of April 15, 2010. Comparisons using time-series data from the THS Trend File are also included. The THS Trend File contains only those facilities that have participated in each cycle of the survey since the 2002 survey cycle.

This Juristat provides an overview of young persons under correctional services, in the third year since the introduction of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), which came into effect on April 1, 2003. It uses data from the Youth Custody and Community Services (YCCS) Survey and the Integrated Correctional Services Survey (ICSS) to analyze trends within correctional services including, sentenced custody, remand (pre-trial detention), probation, the community portion of a custody sentence, and deferred custody and supervision order sentence.
This Juristat examines youth correctional data which are drawn from two sources: 1) The Youth Key Indicator Report which measures the number of youth held in custody on an average day and on probation on an average month-end basis. An examination of trends provides an overview of caseload in youth corrections, as well as incarceration and probation rates, and 2) The YCCS survey and the ICSS collect data on youth admissions to and releases from custody and community services. These data are examined based on key case characteristics such as age, sex, Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal identity, most serious offence and length of time served. Data are analyzed at the provincial/territorial as well as national levels.
