Description:
It is generally recommended that weighted estimation approaches be used when analyzing data from a long-form census microdata file. Since such data files are now available in the RDC's, there is a need to provide researchers there with more information about doing weighted estimation with these files. The purpose of this paper is to provide some of this information - in particular, how the weight variables were derived for the census microdata files and what weight should be used for different units of analysis. For the 1996, 2001 and 2006 censuses the same weight variable is appropriate regardless of whether people, families or households are being studied. For the 1991 census, recommendations are more complex: a different weight variable is required for households than for people and families, and additional restrictions apply to obtain the correct weight value for families.

This demolinguistic portrait of the French-speaking population in Nova Scotia was undertaken with the financial support of Canadian Heritage's Official Languages Secretariat, Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) and the Department of Justice Canada. It is the ninth of a series of portraits of official-language minorities in Canada, prepared by Statistics Canada's Language Statistics Section.
This portrait of the French-speaking population in Nova Scotia contains information drawn from Canadian censuses from 1951 to 2006 and the Survey on the Vitality of Official-Language Minorities (SVOLM) conducted in 2006 by Statistics Canada. Census: The census data contained in this report are drawn from the long census questionnaire, completed by 20% of households and including 61 questions of which 7 are language-related. Survey on the Vitality of Official-Language Minorities (SVOLM): This is a cross-sectional sample survey. Respondents to the (SVOLM) are selected from the sample of persons who completed the long questionnaire in the 2006 Census.

This annual report presents national data on the deaths investigated by Coroners and Medical Examiners (C/ME). These deaths are examined based on their type - natural, accidental, suicide, homicide or undetermined. In addition, the data will be placed in context based on detailed information specific to the circumstances surrounding the death, such as the location of the event leading to death, the activity at the time of the event leading to death, and the use of any safety devices. C/MEs hold data on deaths reported to the offices in their province or territory. The Canadian Coroner and Medical Examiner Database (CCMED) project grew out of recognition that the availability of national level information about the circumstances of deaths that come to the attention of C/MEs will strengthen the ability of the health, justice and other sectors to take measures to protect Canadians from further preventable deaths.

This paper presents a first Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) compiled for Canada. Using data for the year 2000, the authors construct a SAM for the national economy. A SAM extends the National Accounts to allow for a fuller understanding of the socioeconomic system that captures the interdependencies of institutional groups. This paper presents a macro SAM with three micro extensions. The first application expands the household sector through integration with household surveys, showing incomes, outlays, savings, and fiscal transfers of the sector by income quintile and other household attributes. For this exercise, the authors use a market-transaction approach, which introduces a new perspective on household savings that diverges from national accounting concepts and the Canadian System of National Accounts sub-control totals. The second application expands employment income by age, gender, educational attainment, and industry of employment. The third application shows product taxes by type of expenditure and type of tax.

This series examines the functional limitations - physical, emotional and social - that affect Canadians with various diseases and health conditions. These descriptions and classifications are the first step in a new approach to measuring the health of Canadians that examines what factors are adversely affecting population health and how to address them.
This information is primarily intended to document the disease classifications used in the Population Health Impact of Disease in Canada (PHI) research program. It also provides health professionals, advocacy groups, and individual Canadians with an overview of how living with various diseases or health conditions affects day-to-day functioning throughout the various phases of disease progression and treatment.
