- 41. Children with Disabilities and Their Families ArchivedJournals and periodicals: 89-585-XGeography: CanadaDescription: The 2001 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) is a post-censal survey of adults and children whose everyday activities are limited because of a condition or health problem. A sample of those persons who answered "Yes" to the 2001 Census disability filter questions were included in the PALS survey population. Approximately 8,000 children (aged 0 to 14) living in households in the 10 provinces were selected to participate in the children's component of the survey. Persons living in institutions, on Indian reserves, and in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut were excluded. The data were collected after the 2001 Census, between September 2001 and January 2002. Note that information on children with disabilities was gathered through interviews with their parents or guardians.
Using the PALS data, this article describes the lives of children aged 5 to 14 who have disabilities and the impact of their disability on the daily activities and employment situation of their families.
Specific themes covered are: -help with everyday activities received by children with disabilities; -parents access to formal and informal help; -impacts of the child's disability on the family's employment situation; -children's access to specialized aids and services; and -household income.
Release date: 2003-07-29 - Articles and reports: 11F0019M2001171Geography: CanadaDescription:
A framework for thinking about intergenerational mobility as it relates to the relationship between parent and child incomes as well as evidence on the degree and sources of intergenerational mobility in Canada is reviewed. The major conclusion is that Canadian society is characterized by a good deal of intergenerational mobility, and the available evidence suggests that being raised in low-income does not pre-ordain children to low-income in adulthood. Canada compares well in this regard to many other countries, being characterized on average by more mobility than the U.S. or U.K. and on a par with some of the most mobile nations. The sources for this pattern have to do with access to high quality education, and high quality non-monetary investments in children. However, there is no clear evidence linking the level of family income to the nature of these investments.

The present study updates this reserach to 1997, while shifting the emphasis to families with very young children.Release date: 2001-06-22
- 44. Health status of children ArchivedArticles and reports: 82-003-X19990034932Geography: CanadaDescription:
The 20th century saw a dramatic decline in infant mortality in Canada and an accompanying decline in regional disparities in infant mortality.
Income-related differences in infant mortality diminished substantially; however, by 1996, rates in the poorest neighbourhoods were still two-thirds higher than those in the richest neighbourhoods.
Infant mortality in Canada's poorest neighbourhoods is now significantly lower than the national rate for the United States. However, it is less impressive than what has been attained in parts of Europe, such as France and Sweden. The infant mortality rate in Canada's richest neighbourhoods is currently only about as low as the national rate for Sweden.
In recent years in Canada, income-related disparities in infant mortality have ceased to diminish, although regional disparities have continued to decline.
Since 1971, Canada has seen dramatic reductions in child mortality due to most external causes of death (accidents, poisoning and violence). Nevertheless, there has been an increase in suicides among children.
Most children in Canada are in very good health. However, socioeconomic differences are evident from an early age. The children of parents with a low level of education are more likely to have poorer perceived health and are less likely to enjoy unbroken good health.

The primary goal of this chapter is to improve our understanding of the roles that family structure and low-income play in the determination of psychiatric disorders, poor school performance, and social problems among Canadian children. While there is broad agreement that environmental factors have an impact on these outcomes, until recently there has been little or no Canadian data with which to assess the importance of socio-economic factors in determining the incidence and severity of such problems.

In this chapter, we assess the family's role in determining the acquisition of higher education and literacy. More specifically, our objective is to relate individual educational attainment, literacy abilities, and labour market characteristics to parental educational and labour market attributes. We compare different age cohorts and thereby examine relationships between parents and children over more than one generation.
Release date: 1998-11-05 - 50. Healthcare utilization during the first year of life: the impact of social and economic background ArchivedArticles and reports: 89-553-X19980014025Geography: CanadaDescription:
Socio-economic status - as measured by income, education and occupation - is a complex phenomenon used to describe social inequities. It is well known that people in lower socioeconomic categories experience higher mortality rates and poorer health than those further up the social ladder. In addition, differences in health by socio-economic status are most pronounced in early and late mid- life. However, it is not clearly understood why this is so.
