Food processing is one of Canada's largest manufacturing industries, consisting of more than 3,000 establishments. Employing close to 230,000 people in 1998, it boasted a gross domestic product of $15 billion that same year. The relationship between the use of advanced manufacturing technology and firm performance during the 1990s, as measured by growth in labour productivity and growth in market share, is the subject of a recently released Statistics Canada study, which finds that a high-technology orientation is closely associated with success.

The public sector is often considered staid and unchanging. Based on recent findings, this perception may need to be updated. Four-fifths of Canadian public sector organizations introduced significantly improved organizational structures or management techniques between 1998 and 2000. This rate of introducing organizational change is twice that recorded by the private sector (38%). The public sector also led the private sector overall in the introduction of significantly improved technologies (85% versus 44%).

The first survey of innovation, advanced technologies and practices in the Canadian construction sector was recently conducted. Of the five types of technologies listed in the survey, communications technologies have the highest percentage of use (46% of businesses). Of all the techonolgies, three computer-related technologies had the highest percentage of use : e-mail (38%), company computer networks (25%) and computer aided design (23%). The three advanced practices with the largest percentage of business using them, each with one third of businesses, are: design-build contracts, computerized inventory control and computerized estimating software.
