This product is a series of profiles for a number of census metropolitan areas, census agglomerations and communities across Canada with a large Aboriginal population, either in numbers or share of the area's total population. This report examines the demographic and socio-economique characteristics of the Aboriginal population living in the census agglomeration (CA) of La Tuque, Quebec. The census agglomeration of La Tuque includes the Atikamekw d'Opitciwab (Obedjiwan) and the Conseil des Atikamekw de Wemotaci (Coucoucache and Wemotaci). The 2006 Census and 2006 Aboriginal People Survey (APS), which provide an extensive set of data about Aboriginal people, are the data sources. Aditional charts and tables for La Tuque which exclude the two reserves are included in the appendix

Participation in extracurricular activities, including both sports and cultural activities, can be associated with positive benefits for children. The purpose of the current study was to examine participation in sports and cultural activities for Inuit, Métis and off-reserve First Nations children aged 6 to 14 years. Socio-demographic factors including the child's basic characteristics, cultural factors and family characteristics were also examined to determine any associations with participation in sports and cultural activities.

Using the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (15 and older) and Métis Supplement this article explores various cultural activities of the Métis population. More specifically, it considers involvement in traditional activities, such as: arts and crafts, hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering wild vegetation. It also explores Aboriginal language use, involvement in Métis-specific organizations, and spiritual and religious practices. Findings are presented by sex, age, and region.
