This Juristat examines how Canadian crime rates compare to those in the United States. Using police-reported crime data, the analysis focuses on seven comparable offences: homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, break and enter, motor vehicle theft, theft, and arson. As well, three comparable offences were compared using charge/arrest data, including drug violations, impaired driving, and prostitution. Crime rate comparisons are presented at the national, regional, and metropolitan levels. This is a special topic Juristat of great interest to those working in the criminal justice system, as well as researchers, policy makers, and anyone who is interested in cross-national crime comparisons.

Information and communications technologies in Canada is designed to profile the growth and development of the Canadian information and communications technologies (ICT) sector. The publication provides a statistical overview of the ICT sector on the basis of key economic variables, including production, employment, international trade, revenue and research and development expenditures.

Statistics Canada's first quantification of the ICT sector appeared in the compendium publication entitled Networked Canada: beyond the information highway, catalogue no. 56-504-XIE. This publication updates these estimates with the most recent data, while providing improved industrial coverage and in-depth analysis of Canada's ICT sector.

Many different data sources have been used throughout the project, and while all efforts have been made to maximize the amount of data available, it has not been possible in all instances to consistently report for all ICT industries and all relevant variables. The conversion to the new North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) has largely contributed to these difficulties, and it is expected that a greater range of data will be available once all of the survey programs begin reporting on the basis of this new industry classification.

For the first time in a Canadian asset and debt survey, the 1999 Survey of Financial Security (SFS) includes an estimate of the value of benefits accrued in employer (i.e.registered) pension plans (RPPs). Although not an asset in the sense that it can be sold and used for another purpose, employer pension plan benefits are nonetheless an important part of the net worth of Canadians, as they provide many with at least a portion of their income in retirement. For many families, it is likely to be one of the largest assets.

The 1999 SFS provides the most comprehensive picture of the net worth of Canadians yet available. Information was collected on the value of all major financial and non-financial assets, and on the money owing on mortgages, vehicles, credit cards, student loans and other debts. The value of these assets, less the debts, is referred to as net worth. Data collection took place from May to July 1999, in all provinces. Although this is the seventh time that an asset and debt survey has been conducted by Statistics Canada, over 15 years have passed since the last survey was done, in 1984. Many changes have taken place since that time, in both the economy and the structure of families. Survey findings are available in the report The assets and debts of Canadians: an overview of the results of the Survey of Financial Security (catalogue no. 13-595-XIE).

In 1998/99, 3.8 million adults reported having used the services of an alternative practitioner in the previous year. This was not a rejection of conventional health care, as users of alternative practitioners were more likely than non-users to have a regular physician and also to have consulted specialists.

Among people aged 15 or older who were diagnosed with cancer in1992, five-year relative survival rates were highest for prostate and breast cancer and lowest for lung cancer. Prognoses for prostate and breast cancer were poorer at younger and older ages. Colorectal cancer relative survival rates varied little by age. Relative survival rates for lung cancer decreased with age among both sexes.

The factors related to the way that individuals view their health extend beyond physical conditions to include lifestyle, psychological variables and socio-economic status. Change in health status, in health behaviour and in psycho-social factors is also related to self-perceived health.

This report presents a brief overview of the information collected in Cycle 13 of the General Social Survey (GSS). Cycle 13 is the third cycle (following cycles 3 and 8) that collected information in 1999 on the nature and extent of criminal victimisation in Canada. Focus content for cycle 13 addressed two areas of emerging interest: public perception toward alternatives to imprisonment; and spousal violence and senior abuse. Other subjects common to all three cycles include perceptions of crime, police and courts; crime prevention precautions; accident and crime screening sections; and accident and crime incident reports. This report is produced from data supplied by Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency. It provides information on retirement savings through registered pension plans (RPPs) and/or registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) from 1993 to 1999. The data make it possible to identify the characteristics (age, sex and income) of tax-filers who did and who did not participate in these programs.

Private radio broadcasters' revenues surpassed $1.0 billion for the first time in 2000, increasing 5.2% from 1999. This increase was largely the result of the good performance of FM broadcasters whose revenues increased by 7.9% compared to 0.8% for AM broadcasters. Revenues grew at a rate below the national average in New Brunswick, Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia and at a rate above the national average in all other regions.

This publication incorporates data on travel and tourism from many different sources. It consists of analytical texts, charts and tables on demand and supply of tourism products and services. Data are presented at the national, provincial and regional/municipal levels.

Global tourism continued to grow in 1998 despite the financial crisis that affected much of the East Asia/Pacific region. However, the strong recovery of tourism in that region in 1999 helped boost international tourist arrivals at national borders to a record 663 million and receipts to US$455 billion.

In keeping with the upward trend worldwide, international travel to Canada (all durations combined) increased by 5.2% for arrivals from overseas and 1.8% for arrivals from the United States in 1999. Between 1998 and 1999 expenditures during those trips jumped by 9.5% and 6.5% for overseas and American visitors respectively.

With the Canadian economy in solid shape, the number of overnight trips made by Canadians in Canada remained steady in 1999, as did travel to overseas destinations. Despite the Canadian dollar's weakness relative to its American counterpart, overnight travel to the United States was up 5% from 1998.

To help the reader understand the dynamics of the domestic travel market in Canada, this article briefly describes the relative situations of the provincial domestic travel markets using one of their most important characteristics, travel expenditures.

The decade ended on a positive note with Canada welcoming a record 19.4 million overnight international tourists, a 3% increase over 1998. Although visitation showed in comparison to the 7% increase a year earlier, this was the largest number of overnight visitors recorded over the history of the international travel survey.

In 1999, travel expenditures in Canada totalled $50.1 billion, of which $20.1 billion or 40% was transportation-related. Canadians and foreigners travel billions of kilometres per year in Canada - by air, train or boat or in road vehicles, including private passenger vehicles as well as urban buses and intercity motor coaches providing scheduled or charter services.

The number of passengers on transborder flights between Canada and the United States has increased significantly since 1995. The 1995 base year conincides with the signing of the Open Skies Agreement, which opened up air travel markets between these two countries. The agreement has resulted in substantial changes to air travel in North America.

This guide presents information of interest to users of data from the Survey of Household Spending. Data are collected via personal interview conducted in January, February and March after the reference year using a paper questionnaire. Information is gathered about the spending habits, dwelling characteristics and household equipment of Canadian households during the reference year. The survey covers private households in the ten provinces. (The three territories are surveyed every second year starting in 2001.)
