- 1. Wages, Youth Employment, and School Enrollment: Recent Evidence from Increases in World Oil Prices ArchivedArticles and reports: 11F0019M2014353Geography: CanadaDescription:
Canada's oil reserves are concentrated in three Canadian provinces: Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Oil prices received by Canadian oil producers more than doubled between 2001 and 2008. The proportion of young men employed in the oil industry differs markedly across provinces and education levels. Taken together, these facts suggest that the increases in world oil prices observed between 2001 and 2008 may have induced cross-educational and cross-provincial variation in labour demand and male wage growth in Canada. Using data from the Canadian Labour Force Survey, this study exploits this variation in wage growth in order to estimate the elasticity of young men's labour market participation and school enrollment with respect to wages.

- Articles and reports: 11F0027M2012079Geography: CanadaDescription: This paper studies the growth of the Canadian resource economy and the contribution of trading gains arising from increasing terms of trade to real income growth from 1870 to 2010. It combines a historical account of the growth of a succession of natural resources--examining both the production and price history of agriculture, forestry, mining, and oil and gas--with an overview of the impact of these developments on Canadian well-being. It uses estimates of the difference between real income and real output growth, based on measurement theory from the System of National Accounts, to measure trading gains that arose from increasing terms of trade over the period.Release date: 2012-04-23
- 4. Economy and the environment ArchivedArticles and reports: 16-201-X201100011438Geography: CanadaDescription: This analytical article "Economy and the environment", provides information on the relationship between Canada's economy and environment. The report starts with a discussion of how the economy and the environment can be linked in conceptual terms (Section 2). It then presents Canada's environment in the international context (Section 3). Sections 4, 5 and 6 highlight Canada's endowment of natural resources and underlines their role in our economy with statistics on timber, energy, minerals, land and fresh water. Section 7 focuses on the flow of materials and energy between the economy and the environment with statistics on the intensity of energy use and resulting greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, Section 8 presents a selection of statistics on what households, businesses and governments are doing to reduce their impact on the environment.Release date: 2011-06-28
- 5. The Canadian manufacturing industry: Investments and use of energy-related processes or technologies ArchivedArticles and reports: 16-002-X200900411030Geography: CanadaDescription:
Energy use is one of the primary contributors to environmental degradation and climate change. This article provides a profile of the Canadian manufacturing industry and the investments made in energy-related processes and technologies in 2006. These investments either reduced the amount of energy used for a process, or lowered the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants produced through the production and use of energy.
Release date: 2009-12-09 - Articles and reports: 16-002-X200900310927Geography: CanadaDescription:
Water is essential for crop production, whether it is provided by rain or irrigation. Although relatively few farms in Canada irrigate, this use of water can represent a significant portion of water use in some areas of the country. This article presents information on the use of irrigation in 2007.

Release date: 2009-06-18 - Articles and reports: 11-010-X200801110733Geography: CanadaDescription:

Release date: 2008-11-13 - Articles and reports: 16-002-X200800210623Geography: CanadaDescription: This study compares businesses' greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction activities and expenditures by establishment size using data from the Survey of Environmental Protection Expenditures.Release date: 2008-06-25
- 10. The new underground economy of subsoil resources ArchivedArticles and reports: 11-010-X200701010365Geography: CanadaDescription:
This article looks in more detail at how the commodity boom has affected our primary industries over the last 5 years, notably the shift from forestry to energy and mining. Rather than being 'hewers of wood and drawers of water', it is more accurate to say 'conveyors of crude and moilers of metals'.
