Visualizing Vector Data (Part 1): Symbology Styles - ARCHIVED
Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 89-20-00052020009
In this QGIS tutorial we’ll cover the available symbology styles and explore their application to text and numeric field types in visualizing vector layers. Follow along as we discuss principles, procedures, and applications of these styles to different fields and vector geometries (i.e. points, lines and polygons). We’ll begin with simple edits to the colour, outline and transparency of layers, prior to applying Categorized and Graduated styles to text and numeric fields, and then conclude with three additional styles available for point layers. For graduated symbologies, the influence of the distributions of values on the mode and break values used in visualization are discussed. Learn to create striking and dynamic visualizations of point geometries with the Point Cluster and Heat Map styles, showing changing point counts and densities with changes in scale and extent. Methods for applying and modifying additional colour ramps and presets are also shown. Apply these skills in developing your own logical and interpretable visualizations for layers relevant to your areas of work and expertise – a prerequisite to creating well-balanced and intuitive maps.
