Description: This technical guide describes the estimation of the Building Construction Price Index (BCPI) from 2023 onward. It explains the component cost methodology and the data sources used to derive price relatives that are aggregated to estimate the index.

The BCPI measures the quarterly change over time in the prices that contractors charge to construct a range of new residential and non-residential buildings. The index is available for 15 Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs)—St. John’s, Moncton, Halifax, Quebec, Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Victoria—as well as for a Canada-wide composite.
