The importance of cultural continuity in foster care for the long-term mental health of Indigenous people in Canada
Articles and reports: 41-20-00022025015Description: Using data from the 2022 Indigenous Peoples Survey (IPS), this study examines the relationship between cultural continuity in foster care—specifically, childhood placement in Indigenous versus non-Indigenous foster care—and mental health outcomes later in life. It also explores whether this relationship is mediated by a strengthened sense of belonging, measured through family ties, belonging to the local community, and identification with a shared Indigenous identity.
