Municipal wastewater systems in Canada, 2024

Released: 2026-06-30

Data related to the volumes of wastewater (sewage) processed by municipal wastewater systems in Canada for the year 2024 are now available.

  Note to readers

The target population of this statistical activity consists of municipal wastewater systems with a flow of 100 cubic metres or more per day, and includes approximately 2,000 systems. These estimates exclude systems that service First Nations reserves, government institutions, commercial and industrial establishments, and provincial parks.

As of 2018, no data on combined sewer overflow volumes from Quebec municipalities are available, thus estimates for volume of sewer overflows do not include municipal wastewater systems in the province of Quebec.

Please note that this is the final release of data from the Municipal Wastewater Systems in Canada. Input data will continue to be collected by Environment and Climate Change Canada, as required under the Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations, and will be published through the Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations Reported Data on the Open Government Portal.
