Public Use Microdata File: Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating, 2023

Released: 2026-04-22

The public use microdata file (PUMF) for the 2023 Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating is now available. This survey is an important source of information on the behaviour of Canadians regarding donations, volunteer activities and participation. It also explores why some individuals may be unable to participate in these types of activities, for reasons that could include health issues and scheduling conflicts.

The Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating has undergone few changes to the content since it was last conducted in 2018.

This documentation was designed to help users access and manipulate the PUMF for the 2023 Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating. It contains the PUMF data and describes the objectives, methodology and estimation procedures for this survey as well as guidelines for releasing estimates. Statistics Canada collected data on the topic of giving, volunteering and participating for the eighth time in 2023.

  Note to readers

The survey included individuals aged 15 years and older living in private households in the 10 provinces. A user guide and data dictionary are also available with the 2023 Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating public use microdata file (PUMF). PUMFs are files containing the responses of individual respondents to a survey that have been modified to ensure the anonymity of the respondents. In the Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating, charitable donations include all monetary donations reported by individuals, regardless of whether or not the donation resulted in a tax credit.
