Released: 2026-03-12
New motor vehicle registrations, 2025
In 2025, there were 1,866,714 new motor vehicle registrations in Canada, a 0.7% increase from 2024. The largest year-over-year growth occurred in the second quarter (+6.0%) of 2025, while the fourth quarter saw a decline of 7.2%.
Among vehicle types, new registrations for vans saw the most significant growth in 2025, increasing by 20.4% compared with the previous year. This was followed by multipurpose vehicles (+1.2%) and pickup trucks (+0.9%). Multipurpose vehicles continued to lead in total registrations, accounting for 63.2% of all new registrations. In contrast, new registrations for passenger cars fell by 7.0% compared with 2024.
Growth among fuel types varied in 2025. New registrations for hybrid electric vehicles rose by 36.1%, followed by diesel-powered vehicles (+9.4%) and gasoline-powered vehicles (+2.9%). Conversely, registrations for both battery-electric vehicles (-43.1%) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (-10.0%) decreased when compared with the previous year.
New zero-emission vehicle registrations decrease by over a third in 2025
In 2025, new zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) registrations decreased by 34.7% compared with the previous year and accounted for 9.5% of all new registrations, down from 14.6% in 2024. The largest year-over-year decrease occurred in the fourth quarter of 2025 (-43.2%), partly because of a sharp increase in registrations of ZEVs towards the end of 2024 as Canadians anticipated ZEV rebate pauses in 2025
At the provincial level, new registrations for ZEVs declined in 2025, with Quebec (-48.7%) experiencing the largest decrease, followed by Prince Edward Island (-25.5%), British Columbia (-21.2%), New Brunswick (-17.7%), Ontario (-17.2%), Nova Scotia (-13.0%) and Manitoba (-6.9%).
