Canada's monthly international trade in services surplus widened from $0.1 billion in November to $0.7 billion in December. Overall, imports of services declined 2.2% to $19.4 billion, and exports of services increased 0.8% to $20.2 billion.
In December, imports of commercial services declined 1.8% to $11.0 billion, driven by a decrease in non-financial commercial services. Imports of transportation services fell 4.9% to $3.3 billion, largely as a result of a decline in services related to the marine transportation of goods. Imports of travel services were down 1.6% to $5.0 billion as spending by Canadian travellers abroad fell.
Exports of commercial services rose 1.5% to $12.2 billion in December, mostly due to an increase in non-financial commercial services. Exports of travel services were down 0.6% to $5.8 billion while exports of transportation services increased 1.3% to $2.0 billion.

Total exports of goods increased 2.6% to $65.6 billion in December, and total imports of goods rose 0.6% to $66.9 billion. As a result, the trade in goods deficit narrowed, going from $2.6 billion in November to $1.3 billion in December. Combined, the trade balance for goods and services amounted to a deficit of $0.6 billion.
On an annual basis, exports of services increased 3.2% to $239.2 billion in 2025, and imports were up 2.0% to $234.8 billion. As a result, Canada's trade in services surplus widened from $1.5 billion in 2024 to $4.4 billion in 2025.

Note to readers
New publication dates for Canadian international trade in services statistics
As a result of the recent US government shutdown, Statistics Canada has announced new release dates for Canadian International Merchandise Trade statistics, with several months affected.
Statistics for the January 2026 reference month are tentatively scheduled for publication on March 12, 2026.
Statistics Canada will communicate any updates to release dates should changes be necessary. Following this release, the publication of monthly international trade statistics is expected to return to the originally planned release schedule.
