Travel between Canada and other countries, November 2025

Released: 2026-01-23

Highlights

In November, the number of Canadian-resident return trips from the United States was down 23.6% year over year, while the number of trips to Canada by US residents was down 9.0%.

In November, both the number of trips to Canada by overseas residents and the number of Canadian-resident return trips from overseas increased by 13.6% compared with the same month a year earlier.

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the number of Canadian-resident return trips from abroad was up 1.9% in November. US-resident arrivals decreased 2.0%, while overseas-resident arrivals edged up 0.6%.

Trips to Canada by US residents decrease

In November, US-resident trips to Canada (1.3 million) decreased 9.0% from the same month in 2024.

Ontario saw the largest decline in US-resident arrivals, partially because of a base-year effect from a swift year-over-year increase in November 2024, which coincided with a series of high-profile concerts in Toronto. Additionally, in November 2025, flights to Canada might have been impacted by the reduction of flights by the US Federal Aviation Administration at 40 of the busiest US airports, during the US government shutdown.

Arrivals in Canada by automobile (969,300) were down 9.5% year over year in November, with 58.3% of these arrivals being same-day trips. Meanwhile, air arrivals (299,900) decreased 8.4% year over year.

Trips to Canada by overseas residents continue to increase

In November, 324,200 overseas residents arrived in Canada, up 13.6% from the same month a year earlier, with the majority (85.6%) of arrivals by air.

An increase in arrivals from Europe (+14.8%) and Asia (+16.9%)—the top two source markets for overseas visitors to Canada—was the primary contributor to the year-over-year rise in overseas-resident arrivals in November.

The top three countries of residence for overseas visitors were the United Kingdom (33,700), France (26,200) and India (22,900), accounting for 25.5% of all overseas arrivals in Canada in November.

Seasonally adjusted arrivals

Tourism is influenced by seasonal effects (e.g., actual seasons and holidays such as Canada Day and Thanksgiving) and by calendar effects (e.g., number of weekends in a month). All statistics in this section are based on seasonally adjusted data (for more information, see the Note to readers).

Trips to Canada by US residents decrease

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the overall number of arrivals in Canada by US residents was down 2.0% in November 2025. A decrease in arrivals by air (-6.5%) was the main contributor to the overall monthly decline.

Trips to Canada by overseas residents increase slightly

In November, the number of overseas-resident arrivals in Canada rose by 0.6% on a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, led by residents of Europe (+1.6%) and Africa (+11.4%). The overall monthly gain in November was driven by higher numbers of visitors from the United Kingdom (+5.7%) and Germany (+12.8%), which offset large declines in arrivals from South Korea (-16.0%), Brazil (-12.3%) and Taiwan (-10.8%).

  Note to readers

Unless otherwise specified, this release uses unadjusted (raw) data.

Seasonal adjustment

Tourism is influenced by seasonal effects (e.g., holidays such as Canada Day and Thanksgiving) and calendar effects (e.g., number of weekends in a month). Seasonally adjusted data are data that have been modified to eliminate the effect of seasonal and calendar influences to allow for more meaningful comparisons of economic conditions from period to period. For more information on seasonal adjustment, see Seasonally adjusted data – Frequently asked questions.

Revisions

Seasonally adjusted data for August to October 2025 have been revised. No revisions were made to the unadjusted data.

Integrated Primary Inspection Line – Air integration

In 2025, Statistics Canada integrated information about travellers processed through the Canada Border Services Agency's Integrated Primary Inspection Line - Air (IPIL Air) system into the Frontier Counts. Users are advised to exercise caution when comparing 2025 reference months with previous years since published data before 2025 do not include IPIL Air.

For users who would like to make year-over-year comparisons, selected supplementary time series with IPIL Air data for reference years 2023 and 2024 are available, upon request.

Canada Post service disruptions

Statistics Canada will monitor the impacts of Canada Post service disruptions on future releases.
