Release of the 2024 Spatial Access Measures

Released: 2025-07-21

With this release, Statistics Canada has updated the Spatial Access Measures, first published in 2023 in partnership with Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Canada.

The Spatial Access Measures are a set of indicators that aim to show the degree of ease in reaching services and amenities across Canada, using active and public modes of transportation. The amenity categories include places of employment; healthcare facilities; public primary and secondary education facilities; public postsecondary educational facilities; grocery stores; sports and recreational facilities; cultural and arts facilities; and childcare facilities.

This release includes: an update of the data sources from 2021 to 2024; the division of the cycling transit mode into three types based on cyclist comfort: confident cyclists, cautious cyclists, and all ages and abilities cyclists; increased coverage for public transit data sources, transit networks and amenity locations; and the addition of a new amenity category: access to childcare facilities.

Overall, this expands the output of Spatial Access Measures to a total of 48 access measures produced for eight destinations and six modes of transportation, namely access via public transit during peak and off-peak hours, access via cycling (confident cyclists, cautious cyclists and all ages and abilities cyclists) and access via walking. The destinations remain largely consistent with those found in the previous Spatial Access Measures, allowing for comparisons between the time periods.

More details on the methodology and updates can be found in the Spatial Access Measures 2024 Update report.
