New motor vehicle sales, May 2025

There were 194,524 new motor vehicles sold in Canada in May, an increase of 5.0% from May 2024. Sales in dollar terms were up 2.0% in the same period. These gains were entirely attributable to higher sales of new trucks, which increased 7.0% year over year in May 2025. At the same time, passenger car sales decreased 6.8%.
In May, 15,298 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were sold, representing a decline of nearly one-third (-32.3%) compared with the same period one year earlier. Despite this decline, new ZEVs comprised 7.9% of total new motor vehicles sold, the highest rate since January.
