Canadian mushroom growers sold 163,769 short tons of mushrooms in 2024, up 4.6% compared with 2023 and the ninth consecutive annual increase. The total value of mushroom sales rose by 4.8% to $749.5 million in 2024. This increase was attributable to a rise in total production, along with higher average prices reported for both fresh and processed mushrooms.
Most mushrooms produced in Canada are grown indoors and year-round. Cultivated area for mushrooms rose 4.4% to 7.6 million square feet in 2024, while harvested area increased 1.4% to 67.4 million square feet.
Together, Ontario and British Columbia accounted for 92.8% of Canada's total mushroom sales in 2024.
Ontario remained the largest mushroom producing province, accounting for just over half (51.8%) of Canada's total production. Growers in Ontario sold 84,871 short tons of mushrooms, up 4.1% compared with 2023.
The value of British Columbia's mushroom sales rose by 7.0% to $226.5 million in 2024, largely attributable to higher prices and increased production of fresh and processed mushrooms.
