Poultry and egg statistics, May 2025 and annual 2024

Released: 2025-05-29

In 2024, total production of chicken, turkey, and stewing hens increased 0.1% year over year to 1.6 billion kilograms. In contrast, total poultry sales decreased 2.4% over the same period to $4.4 billion, on account of lower producer prices. The decrease in prices was largely attributable to a drop in the cost of production, as prices for key feed components such as corn, soybeans, and wheat decreased throughout the year.

In 2024, Canadian egg farmers produced 915.0 million dozen eggs, up 4.3% from 2023.

Chicken production edges up

Total Canadian chicken production, including stewing hens, edged up 0.2% year over year to 1.4 billion kilograms in 2024. This growth was supported by production increases in Alberta (+1.8%), British Columbia (+1.1%) and Ontario (+0.6%), while production declined in the remaining provinces. Ontario and Quebec combined account for almost two-thirds of all chicken (including stewing hens) in Canada.

Despite a slight increase in production volume, total chicken sales declined 2.1% to $3.9 billion in 2024. Sales declined across the country, with the Atlantic provinces being the lone region to report a marginal increase. The overall national decline was partly attributable to lower producer prices, as the average producer price per kilogram of chicken fell 2.3% year over year to $2.80 in 2024. This decline was due, in part, to lower feed costs, as prices for key poultry feed components such as soybeans, corn, and wheat excluding durum, fell across all major producing provinces from a year earlier.

Turkey production and sales decline

Turkey production declined 0.4% year over year to 158.7 million kilograms in 2024. While British Columbia (+10.5%), Manitoba (+6.4%), Alberta (+5.6%), and Quebec (+5.3%) reported higher output, this was offset by sharper declines in other provinces, particularly among the Atlantic provinces (-12.9%), Saskatchewan (-14.5%) and Ontario (-4.5%).

Total turkey sales declined 4.4% from 2023, to $465.9 million in 2024, on lower feed costs. Turkey production accounted for 10.1% of total poultry production in Canada in 2024.

Sustained growth in egg production and sales

Canadian egg farmers produced 915.0 million dozen eggs in 2024, up 4.3% from the previous year. This increase continues the upward trend in output, supported by steady consumer demand. Total egg sales grew 4.6% year over year to $2.3 billion. Meanwhile, the average producer price per dozen table eggs edged up 0.1% year over year to $2.20.

While hatcheries contributed 8.8% of total egg production, they accounted for 22.8% of total egg sales, reflecting their higher market value.
