Total sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased 0.3% to $8.1 billion in September.

Non-seasonally adjusted prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 3.5% in September when compared with September 2023, and unadjusted prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments increased 2.3% over the same period.

Higher sales led by limited-service eating places

In September, the largest increase in dollar terms came from higher sales at limited-service eating places (+0.3%), the industry's sixth consecutive monthly increase. Higher sales were also seen at full-service restaurants (+0.2%).

Special food services posted an increase of 1.0% in September, rebounding from the decrease posted in August. Higher receipts were also registered at drinking places (+0.8%) in September.

Sales up in seven provinces

In September, seven provinces saw increased sales. Quebec (+1.0%) posted the largest gains in dollar terms, with higher sales being posted in all industry groups.

Sales in British Columbia grew 0.5% in September, led by stronger sales from limited-service eating places. Sales in Alberta also increased 0.5%, on higher sales at full-service restaurants.

The largest provincial decrease in September came from Newfoundland and Labrador (-1.1%), driven by lower sales at full-service restaurants. Sales in Saskatchewan (-0.1%) also fell, led by lower sales at limited-service eating places.

Both seasonally adjusted data and trend-cycle estimates are subject to revision as additional observations become available. These revisions could be large and could even lead to a reversal of movement, especially for reference months near the end of the series or during periods of economic disruption.
