Stocks of frozen and chilled meats, October 1, 2024
Released: 2024-11-08
Stocks of frozen and chilled meats in cold storage facilities totalled 126 877 tonnes as of October 1, 2024, an increase of 4.2% compared with July 1, 2024. This also represented an increase of 2.1% from October 1, 2023.
Stocks of frozen and chilled pork (77 186 tonnes) made up the largest proportion of frozen and chilled meats in cold storage facilities in Canada as of October 1, 2024, followed by stocks of frozen and chilled beef (33 483 tonnes).
As of October 1, 2024, stocks of frozen and chilled pork in cold storage facilities were up 3.4%, compared with July 1, 2024. A decrease in pork exports for two consecutive quarters (from April to June and July to September) may have contributed to this increase. However, stocks were 1.3% lower than one year earlier (October 1, 2023).
Stocks of frozen and chilled beef in cold storage facilities increased 3.0% as of October 1, 2024, compared with July 1, 2024. The resolution of a labour disruption in the cattle slaughter industry in Ontario, paired with increased slaughter in Alberta, may have contributed to this growth. Stocks of frozen and chilled beef were 11.2% higher than one year earlier (October 1, 2023).
At the national level, Quebec held 51.0% (39 348 tonnes) of the stocks of frozen and chilled pork as of October 1, 2024, while Ontario held 49.0% (16 393 tonnes) of the stocks of frozen and chilled beef.
