  Note to readers

The Rural Canada Housing Profiles (RCHP) provides information on housing in rural and small town Canada. The RCHP was developed using data from several Statistics Canada programs, including the 2021 Census of Population, the Canadian Housing Statistics Program, the Building Permits program, and the Investment in Building Construction program.

This release presents data with current dollar values. Indicators in the RCHP include, among others, ones based on municipal building permits, arranged by type of residential building and type of work, investments in new construction and in alterations and improvements, period of construction, number of rooms, tenure, household size, and housing suitability.

The RCHP data are disseminated by Statistics Canada as five data tables. The table themes are: residential building permits; investment in residential building construction; residential property characteristics; occupied private dwelling characteristics; and private household characteristics.

The RCHP database defines rural and small town (RST) areas as communities outside census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations according to the Statistics Canada 2016 Standard Geographical Classification.

Data are organized geographically at the following levels (where applicable): Canada, provinces and territories, census subdivisions and RST and urban areas.

All regions of Canada are within the scope of the RCHP database. However, data may not be available if the coverage of a RCHP data source does not extend to specific regions for the reference year(s) in question.

Housing suitability refers to whether a private household is living in suitable accommodations according to the National Occupancy Standard; that is, whether the dwelling has enough bedrooms for the size and composition of the household. For details, see: Dictionary, Census of Population, 2021 – Housing suitability.
