Canada's monthly international trade in services deficit narrowed $224 million from $1.8 billion in August to $1.6 billion in September. Overall, exports of services increased 2.3% to $12.9 billion, while imports edged up 0.5% to $14.5 billion.

Exports of travel services rose 6.0% to $2.4 billion in September on stronger expenditures by both United States and overseas visitors. Imports of travel services were down 0.9% to $3.1 billion, the first decline after seven consecutive monthly increases. In September, imports (-30.7%) and exports (-1.9%) of travel services remained below their levels in February 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Exports of commercial services were up 1.2% to $8.8 billion in September 2022. On their side, imports of commercial services grew 0.9% to $8.2 billion.
Exports of transportation services rose 3.4% to $1.7 billion from higher receipts related to the air transport of goods and passengers. Imports of transportation services edged up 0.8% to $3.0 billion in September with small increases related to the transport of goods by water and the transport of passengers by air.
In September, total exports of goods increased 1.3% to $66.4 billion, and total imports of goods were up 0.4% to $65.2 billion, resulting in a surplus of $1.1 billion. Combined, the trade balance for goods and services amounted to a slight deficit position of $416 million, a $0.8 billion change from a deficit of $1.2 billion in August.
The services trade deficit in August, originally reported at $1.9 billion in the previous release, was revised to $1.8 billion with the release of this month's publication. Imports of services were revised down by $114 million, mainly due to a downward revision to commercial services and travel services. Exports of services were almost unchanged as upward revisions to travel services were offset by downward revisions to commercial services.
Note to readers
COVID-19 and additional data sources
Circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic pose issues for the production of monthly international trade in services statistics, particularly for travel and transportation services.
To better capture the effects of the pandemic, Statistics Canada is incorporating data from the Canada Border Services Agency's primary inspection kiosks into its monthly international trade-in-services program. These are electronic customs declaration kiosks that have been installed in most major Canadian airports. While these data represent only a subset of total travellers, they provide relevant and timely insights.
Further information on the estimation methodology is available upon request.
