The second set of bars represents those with work permits only before admission, with 8.0% of immigrants admitted from 1980 to 1990; 9.1% of those admitted from 1991 to 2000; 4.8% of those admitted from 2001 to 2005; 9.3% of those admitted from 2006 to 2010; 13.5% of those admitted from 2011 to 2015; and 15.3% of those admitted from 2016 to 2021.

The third set of bars represents those with study permits only before admission, with 2.3% of immigrants admitted from 1980 to 1990; 2.6% of those admitted from 1991 to 2000; 2.9% of those admitted from 2001 to 2005; 3.3% of those admitted from 2006 to 2010; 2.5% of those admitted from 2011 to 2015; and 2.6% of those admitted from 2016 to 2021.

The fourth set of bars represents those with work and study permits only before admission, with 2.7% of immigrants admitted from 1980 to 1990; 3.2% of those admitted from 1991 to 2000; 1.7% of those admitted from 2001 to 2005; 3.8% of those admitted from 2006 to 2010; 6.7% of those admitted from 2011 to 2015; and 13.0% of those admitted from 2016 to 2021.

The fifth set of bars represents those with other permits before admission, with 2.4% of immigrants admitted from 1980 to 1990; 0.7% of those admitted from 1991 to 2000; 0.2% of those admitted from 2001 to 2005; 0.2% of those admitted from 2006 to 2010; 0.2% of those admitted from 2011 to 2015; and 0.1% of those admitted from 2016 to 2021.

The line represents the total proportion of immigrants (%) from that period of immigration with pre-admission experience, with 15.7% admitted from 1980 to 1990; 23.8% from 1991 to 2000; 17.9% from 2001 to 2005; 23.6% from 2006 to 2010; 28.9% from 2011 to 2015; and 36.6% from 2016 to 2021.

Note(s): "Pre-admission experience" refers to the category under which an immigrant was authorized to enter Canada for temporary residence purposes before admission as a landed immigrant or permanent resident. In the 2021 Census of Population, data on pre-admission experience are available for immigrants who were admitted to Canada from January 1, 1980, to May 11, 2021. "Recent immigrant" refers to a person who obtained landed immigrant or permanent resident status in the five years preceding a given census. For the 2021 Census of Population, this refers to the period from January 1, 2016, to May 11, 2021.
