Infographic description

The title of the infographic is "Proportion of immigrants in the population, Canada, 1871 to 2016 (estimated) and 2021 to 2041 (projected)"

This is a line chart.

The vertical axis shows the proportion of immigrants in the Canadian population, from 0% to 40%, by increments of 5%.

The horizontal axis shows increments of 10 years from 1871 to 2041, labeled every 20 years from 1871 to 2031.

There is only one series in this chart for years 1871 to 2016, inclusively. From 2021 to 2041, the line splits into two series. These two series correspond to the minimum and maximum values projected by all 11 scenarios considered. The area between the two series is shaded to show the range of possibilities.

The proportion of immigrants in the Canadian population from 1871 to 2041 is: 1871 (16.5%), 1876 (15.2%), 1881 (13.9%), 1886 (13.6%), 1891 (13.3%), 1896 (13.2%), 1901 (13.0%), 1906 (17.5%), 1911 (22.0%), 1916 (22.1%), 1921 (22.3%), 1926 (22.2%), 1931 (22.2%), 1936 (19.9%), 1941 (17.5%), 1946 (16.1%), 1951 (14.7%), 1956 (15.1%), 1961 (15.6%), 1966 (15.4%), 1971 (15.3%), 1976 (15.6%), 1981 (16.0%), 1986 (16.0%), 1991 (16.1%), 1996 (17.4%), 2001 (18.4%), 2006 (19.8%), 2011 (20.6%), 2016 (21.9%), 2021 (ranging from 23.4% to 23.4%), 2026 (ranging from 25.4% to 26.2%), 2031 (ranging from 26.9% to 29.0%), 2036 (ranging from 28.1% to 31.6%), 2041 (ranging from 29.1% to 34.0%).

Notes: In this figure, prior to 1981, immigrants consisted of all persons born outside Canada. In the 1981 and 1986 censuses, the immigrant population consisted of persons who were not Canadian citizens by birth. Beginning in 1991, the immigrant population is defined as persons who are, or have been, landed immigrants in Canada, which means that it does not include non-permanent residents nor foreign-born persons who are Canadian citizens by birth. The shaded area shows the interval between the minimum and maximum values projected by all scenarios considered.
